Klitschko TKOs Adamek Sep 15th 2011, 10:02 Sep 13 2011 In Wroclaw, Poland, Tomasz Adamek - to no one's surprise - gave a great effort in his title challenge against WBC heavyweight champ Vitali Klitschko. Nevertheless, despite his best efforts, Adamek was still no more effective than any of the other fighters that have challenged either Klitschko in recent years. Adamek had no answers for Klitschko's size and power and was staggered in the second, sixth and ninth rounds. At 2:20 of round ten, referee Massimo Barrovecchio mercifully called a halt to the fight. The timing of the stoppage was excellent as a bloodied Adamek had already taken a beating and seemed on the verge of being defenseless against Klitschko's power shots. Punch Stats: Total Punches: Klitschko - 230 of 608 (38%); Adamek - 89 of 301 (30%). Jabs: Klitschko - 140 of 414 (34%); Adamek - 54 of 166 (33%). Power Shots: Klitschko - 90 of 194 (46%); Adamek - 35 of 135 (26%). The 40-year-old Klitschko will reportedly only fight two or three more times before retiring. With no big-name challengers available, Klitschko is considering giving David Haye another title shot. Haye gave a weak, safety-first effort in losing a one-sided unanimous decision to Wladimir Klitschko in July and does not merit another big money bout immediately off of that performance. Vitali, however, apparently wants to do his brother one better and knock out the loud-mouthed Haye. In Atlantic City, undefeated featherweight Yuriorkis Gamboa utilized his speed and precision punching to win round after competitive round against hard-hitting former champ Daniel Ponce De Leon. Unfortunately, the bout was cut short in round eight when an accidental clash of heads opened a large, vertical gash on Ponce De Leon's forehead. The ring doctor examined the cut and and the fight went to the scorecards where Gamboa was ahead by scores of 70-63 twice and 69-64. Punch Stats: Total Punches: Gamboa - 116 of 379 (31%); Ponce De Leon - 91 of 360 (25%). Jabs: Gamboa - 19 of 148 (13%); Ponce De Leon - 19 of 156 (12%). Power Shots: Gamboa - 97 of 231 (42%); Ponce De Leon - 72 of 204 (35%). After the fight Gamboa said he has no more challenges at 126 so will be moving up in weight. He wants a Pacquiao payday but that doesn't seem likely any time soon. Gamboa may be the best featherweight in the world but it's not like he cleaned out the division. Chris John, Juan Manuel Lopez, Mikey Garcia and Gary Russell Jr. would all make intriguing opponents for Gamboa at 126.
