Paul Williams Paralyzed in Motorcycle Crash
May 29th 2012, 13:52

The boxing career of former champ Paul Williams is over after a motorcycle accident has left him paralyzed from the waist down. The injuries are not considered life-threatening and Williams is conscious, alert and - believe it or not - in good spirits. Surgery is scheduled for later this week to help stabilize the healthy portion of his spine.

The crash happened in Atlanta shortly before 8 am.m on Sunday morning. Williams' manager says that Williams - who was wearing a helmet - swerved to avoid an oncoming car and rode up an embankment before losing control of the bike, landing on his back and head. A police report states that Williams "was traveling too fast for conditions and couldn't negotiate a curve and the bike left the roadway" but makes no mention of other vehicles. Regardless of the exact cause of the crash, the accident brings a sudden, tragic end to the boxing career of a talented, exciting fighter who has always seemed to be a genuinely good guy.

Just last week it was announced that Williams would challenge WBC junior middleweight champ Saul "Canelo" Alvarez on September 15 in Las Vegas. Instead, the 30-year-old Williams will be facing an even bigger challenge ...

Boxing's Best of the Century
May 29th 2012, 11:01

Who knows what it is about the end of every year that compels people to issue a seemingly endless array of lists ranking nearly everything imaginable. Regardless of the topic, there are countless ‘best of’, ‘worst of’ and ‘top tens’ to be found in every newspaper, magazine and website. With this not only being the end of the year, but also the end of a decade AND a millennium, the volume of lists is even more overwhelming than usual.

One such list, which will undoubtedly stir much debate among boxing enthusiasts, is the recently released listing of the best fighters of the 20th century as chosen by a five-member panel for the Associated Press. Presented below are the AP results for fighter of the century, as well as the top fighters in each weight class. Recognizing that there are even more opinions than there are lists, each category also includes a poll so that you can have your own say as to who was the best overall and at each and every weight.

Fighter of Century

1. Sugar Ray Robinson - welterweight and five-time middleweight champion
Record: 175-19-6, 109 KO's; Career: 1940-65, 24 years active.

2. Muhammad Ali - first three-time heavyweight champion
Record: 56-5, 37 KO's; Career: 1960-81, 19 years active.

3. Henry Armstrong - only fighter to hold three titles (featherweight, lightweight and welterweight) simultaneously

Johnny Tapia: 1967-2012
May 29th 2012, 01:40

Former champ Johnny Tapia, who battled assorted demons throughout his turbulent life, was found dead at his home in Albuquerque, New Mexico. An autopsy is being performed to determine the cause of dearth.

Tapia won five titles in three weight classes despite cocaine addiction, alcohol abuse, bipolar disorder, suicide attempts, depression and seemingly non-stop legal issues. He was a fan favorite for his all-action fighting style as well as for his ability to overcome adversity.

Tapia last fought on June, when he outpointed washed up former champ Mauricio Pastrana in an eight-rounder. He finished with a 59-5-2 (30 KOs) record, including wins over Danny Romero, Jorge Julio, Cesar Soto and Manuel Medina, as well as losses to Paulie Ayala (twice) and Marco Antonio Barrera.

Boxing: Froch Destroys Bute in Five

Froch Destroys Bute in Five
May 28th 2012, 09:28

Before they met in the ring, former WBC champ Carl Froch claimed previously unbeaten IBF super middleweight Lucian Bute was overrated. After completely dominating and stopping Bute in five rounds, it looks like perhaps the cocky Froch may have been correct. The first two rounds were somewhat even with both fighters landing shots, but Froch looking the heavier-handed of the two. Froch took over in rounds three and four before finishing off Bute in round five with a series of punches that left the former champ reeling and virtually defenseless along the ropes. Referee Earl Brown initially waved the fight off - prompting Froch's promoter to run into the ring to celebrate - only to then begin a standing eight count. Controversy was avoided, however, as Bute's trainer also entered the ring to save his fighter as Bute was in no condition to continue.

Give Bute credit for finally leaving his comfort zone and traveling to Froch's hometown of Nottingham, England for his 10th title defense ... a decision he is likely second-guessing. There is a rematch clause for Froch-Bute II in Montreal, but given the brutal nature of the KO, it remains to be seen whether Bute will want to exercise that clause immediately or take some time off to recover and rebuild his confidence.

One other thought: undefeated WBC/WBA super middleweight Andre Ward champ, who scored a one-sided decision over Froch in December, should have immediately proceeded to a fight with Bute to completely clean out the division rather than letting Froch remove Bute from the picture as a big money opponent. Instead, Ward may face light heavyweight champ Chad Dawson at a catchweight. Dawson will pose a bigger risk in the ring and produce a smaller paycheck for Ward ... not a good combination.

New Opponent for Victor Ortiz
May 26th 2012, 17:22

Fans will have to continue to wait for the long-awaited rematch between Victor Ortiz and Andre Berto. Initially it was Berto's torn left biceps that forced a February 11 fight date to be postponed to June 23. Then Berto tested positive for the banned substance norandrosterone so he's out for the June 23 date.

Instead of continuing to wait around for Berto, Ortiz decided to keep the June 23 date ... he just needed to find an opponent. Several fighters volunteered but it's Josesito Lopez that will get the opportunity. Lopez, who will be moving up from 140 to 147 to face Ortiz, has a career record of 29-4 (17 KOs). Ortiz-Lopez is unlikely to produce a Fight of the Year candidate like Ortiz-Berto I ... but at least it's likely to actually happen.
