De La Hoya Considered October Comeback
Aug 31st 2012, 16:59

Former multi-division champ Oscar De La Hoya says he nearly returned to the ring for an Oct. 20 rematch with WBA middleweight beltholder Felix Sturm at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. De La Hoya won a narrow, disputed decision to take Sturm's WBO middleweight belt on June 5, 2004.

Now 39, De La Hoya has been retired since taking a one-sided beating at the hands of a prime Manny Pacquiao on Dec. 6, 2008. Oscar was tempted to return to headline a card he is promoting that will feature a rematch between Danny Garcia and Erik Morales for Garcia's WBA/WBC light welterweight titles. That plan changed as soon as De La Hoya started working out. "I went running, I went training, did that for a few days. But my body couldn't handle it. I'm 39, but I'm an old 39. I think my body went through a lot, went through the wringer. In terms of being inside the ring, getting hit, but also outside the ring, living a crazy life. If I have the desire of coming back, I go and work out, and there goes those plans." When asked if he's now 100% done as a fighter, De La Hoya replied "A million percent".

Good decision Oscar.

Mayweather Associate Sent to Prison
Aug 31st 2012, 15:33

Ocie Harris, a friend (or associate, depending on who you ask) of Floyd Mayweather Jr., has been sentenced to two to five years in prison for shooting at two men in a car after the men argued with Mayweather. The shooting took place at a Las Vegas skating center on August 23, 2009 and could have landed Harris in jail for as long as 18 years after he pleaded no contest to three felony charges. Six of the seven shots Harris fired in the crowded parking lot hit the BMW sedan he was aiming at but neither the driver nor the passenger were injured.

While Mayweather, fresh off a two-month prison stint himself, was not charged in the case, there is a separate civil lawsuit still pending that alleges that Mayweather orchestrated the attack.

Being on Mayweather's legal team is basically a full-time gig . . .

Wladimir Picks Someone His Own Size
Aug 29th 2012, 12:11

Heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko has dominated smaller opponents for years. Now, for the first time in his professional career, he's going to be looking up at an opponent (if only by one inch). For title defense number thirteen, Klitschko has selected 6-7, 250 pound Mariusz Wach, who is from Poland but lives and trains in New Jersey. The bout will take place on November 10 at the O2 World Arena in Hamburg, Germany.

Wach, 32, is 27-0 with 15 KOs. That's the good news. The reality is that he has faced limited opposition with Kevin McBride and Tye Fields as the biggest names on his resume. Nevertheless, it's nice to see Klitschko face a big, undefeated fighter rather than the retreads and blown up cruiserweights he has faced recently.

Wladimir's older brother, Vitali, is set to defend his WBC belt against undefeated Manuel Charr (21-0, 11 KOs) on September 8 in Moscow.

Ali's Childhood Home for Sale for 50K
Aug 29th 2012, 10:29

The house in Louisville where Muhammad Ali spend his childhood is on the market ... for only $50,000. The small one-story white house is assessed at $23,260. A state historical marker designates the site as the home of the Greatest when he was still known as Cassius Clay. There is hope that the city - or whoever ultimately purchases the property - will preserve it as a museum.

The Fighter: Fact vs. Fiction
Aug 29th 2012, 11:01

The Fighter gets a lot of its facts about the career of Micky Ward right, including several fight sequences which are amazing in their accuracy and attention to detail. In other places, the film takes liberties with the historical record, some for dramatic effect and others for no apparent reason whatsoever. Here's what we have identified as inaccurate in The Fighter:

* The movie has Ward being on a losing skid coming into the Mike Mungin fight in 1988. In reality, Ward was 18-1 and on a four fight winning streak heading into the Mungin fight. Ward's four fight losing streak mentioned in the movie actually took place in 1990-1991.

* The movie makes a big deal out of Ward being outweighed by 20 pounds in his fight with Mungin. In real life, Ward weighed in at 136.5 and Mungin at 145, an 8.5 pound difference.

* The movie depicts Ward taking a terrible beating in the Mungin fight. In reality, the fight went the full ten rounds and Mungin won by very narrow decision: 96-93, 95-94, 95-94.

* The movie mentions a number of Ward opponents - Manetti, Collins and Hernandez - during one montage. In reality, Ward never fought anyone by those names.

* The movie makes it seem like Ward's upset of Alfonso Sanchez secured his title shot against Shea Neary. In reality, Ward beat Sanchez on April 12, 1997 and faced Neary on March 11, 2000, almost three years later and with six other fights in between (in which Ward went 4-2).

* The movie has Ward's career record as 30-7 with 20 KOs as he enters the ring to fight Neary. In reality, his record was 34-9 with 25 KOs. What did the filmmakers gain by making this change?

* The movie has Ward and Neary both weighing 146 pounds. Ward weighed in at 140, Neary at 139. Again, what was gained by making these changes?

* The movie has Ward's mom, Alice Ward, sitting at ringside with his girlfriend Charlene for the Neary fight. In reality, Ward's mom was not present at that fight.

* The movie has Ward being knocked down in round three of the Neary fight. In reality, Ward was never knocked down during the Neary fight.

* The movie has Ward hopelessly behind on the scorecards when he rallies to KO Neary in round eight. In reality, HBO's Harold Lederman had Neary ahead 67-66 entering the eighth round.

* Finally, and most frustratingly to fight fans, the movie makes a big deal out of Ward's fight with Neary being for the world title. In reality, it was for the WBU (World Boxing Union) title. No one considers the WBU beltholder to be the true world champion. Neary, who fought exclusively in the U.K. and Ireland, won the vacant WBU title by defeating Darryl Tyson, who "earned" his shot at the title by getting stopped by Oscar De La Hoya in two rounds.

Did you notice any other historical inaccuracies? If so, please share them with us!

Boxing History
Aug 29th 2012, 11:01

Boxing flourished as a workingman's sport in England in the 18th century. One of the stars of that era was James Figg, who was recognized as heavyweight champ from 1719 through 1730.

A subsequent British heavyweight champ, Jack Broughton, codified his own set of rules (recognized in 1943) which were an important step towards cleaning up the sport. For example, low blows and hitting a fighter while he was down were banned. These rules continued to evolve and governed what is now known as the "bareknuckle era".

Boxing History

Defined broadly as two people punching each other, boxing is arguably the oldest of all sports. It is rules, however, which separate "boxing" from simply "fighting".

The ancient Greeks are generally credited with being the first to institute rules and make boxing a true sport. Many historians cite the inclusion of boxing in the Olympic games as early as 688 B.C. as the sport's birth date.

Boxing grew in stature during Roman times, with contestants often wearing fist coverings which could result in battles to the death. While boxing saw its popularity decline after the fall of Rome, it was destined to make a big comeback.

Hollywood has produced many great boxing films, both fictional and based on real fighters. However, if you're a hardcore fight fan nothing compares to actual footage of the sport's greatest champions.

Academy Award-winning documentary on Muhammad Ali and George Foreman's 1974 "Rumble in the Jungle" in Kinshasa, Zaire. Director Leon Gast spent more than 20 years trying to bring this film to the screen -- his efforts were well worth the wait.

2. Champions Forever: World Heavyweight Champs! (1989)

Fight footage and interviews with boxing greats Muhammad Ali, George Foreman, Joe Frazier, Larry Holmes and Ken Norton. Fascinating look at the group of heavyweights who brought out the best in each other in the division's greatest era.

3. Sonny Liston: The Mysterious Life and Death of a Champion (1995)

Worthwhile looks at the tough life, short championship reign and mysterious death of one of boxing's most feared fighters. Liston was to the early 60's what Mike Tyson was to the late 80's. A sad peek at the sport's corrupt underbelly.

4. Broken Noses (1987)

Bruce Weber's black-and-white film follows Andy Minsker and the boys he coaches at a small boxing club outside Portland, Oregon. Good look at the sport away from the big-time professional spotlight.

5. Sugar Ray Robinson: Pound for Pound (1982)

A must for any fight fans who have never seen the original Sugar Ray, the man generally regarded as the greatest pound-for-pound fighter of all-time. Includes great fight footage as well as commentary from Robinson, Joe Louis, Rocky Marciano, Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, Jack Dempsey, Max Schmeling and Gene Tunney.
