If the referee has to stop a bout in the first round because a boxer has suffered a cut eye or a similar injury, the other boxer is declared the winner. If it happens in the second or third round, though, the judges' point tallies up to that time determine the winner.

Three doctors sit at ringside and each has the authority to stop a bout if medical reasons appear to necessitate it

If both boxers go down at the same time, counting continues as long as one remains down. If both remain down at 10, the boxer with the most points is declared the winner.

Other ways a boxer may be declared the winner during a bout include the referee stopping the bout because the opponent is taking too much punishment, or the opponent being disqualified or withdrawing, perhaps because of injury. Also, the opponent's seconds could decide he is suffering too much punishment and throw in the towel.

Boxers are required to shake hands before the first round and after the results have been declared.

The age limits for Olympic boxing are a minimum age of 17 and a maximum age of 34.

Boxers must be clean shaven or facial hair restricted to a small moustache no longer than the length of the upper lip. Beards are banned.

Before every bout, a medical examiner must declare the boxers fit.

Boxers must weigh in every day.

There are 11 weight divisions (with maximum weights) as follows:

Light flyweight (48 kg)
Flyweight (51kg)
Bantamweight (54kg)
Featherweight (57kg)
Lightweight (60kg)
Light welterweight (64kg)
Welterweight (69kg)
Middleweight (75kg)
Light heavyweight (81kg)
Heavyweight (91kg)
Super heavyweight (more than 91kg)

Boxers must wear boxing gloves conforming to AIBA standards. Gloves weigh 10 ounces and feature a white strip to mark the main hitting area.

Competitors wear either red or blue.

Bouts are conducted in a square ring measuring 6.1 metres inside the ropes on each side. The floor of the ring consists of canvas stretched over a soft underlay, and it extends 45.72 centimetres outside the ropes.

Each side of the ring has four ropes running parallel to it. The lowest one runs 40.66cm above the ground, and the ropes are 30.48cm apart.

The corners of the ring are distinguished by colors. The corners occupied by the boxers are coloured red and blue, and the other two corners, called "neutral" corners, are white.

Becoming An Olympic Boxer
Sep 30th 2011, 10:02

Winning a Gold Medal at the Olympics is the greatest achievement possible in amateur boxing. A successful showing in the Olympics has also proven to be the best possible way to launch a professional boxing career (much better than 'paying your dues' on the pro circuit). So how does an amateur fighter go about qualifying for the Olympics?

GOVERNING BODY FOR THE SPORT

The International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) is the international governing body for boxing. USA Boxing is the national governing body for boxing in the USA.

HOW TO QUALIFY FOR THE OLYMPICS OR THE OLYMPIC TEAM

Boxers qualify for the Olympic Games through regional qualifying tournaments in the Americas, Europe, Asia, Africa and Oceania. The number of boxers accepted from any region depends upon the strength of boxing in the region.

There are eleven men's boxing events (none yet for women), one for each weight category. A country can enter a maximum of one athlete per weight category. The host nation is allocated a maximum of six places (if not otherwise qualified).

There is a limit of 28 boxers for each event, except for heavyweight and super heavyweight which have a limit of 16. This limits the total number of boxers to 284.

At the Olympics, boxers are paired off at random (without regard to ranking) and fight in a single-elimination tournament. However, unlike most Olympic events, the loser in each semi-final bout receives a bronze medal.

Boxers in Trouble
Sep 28th 2011, 13:12

Featherweight Matt Remillard, 25, plead no contest to beating a man with a baseball bat last year and is facing five years in prison. The fight was reportedly over a woman both men had dated and left the victim with a fractured skull, hand and eye socket. Remillard started his career 23-0 before losing by TKO to Mikey Garcia in March.

Former IBF lightweight champ Paul Spadafora is in trouble again. The 36-year-old was stopped for driving 66 mph in a 40 mph zone and arrested after failing a field sobriety test. Spadafora is 7-0 since being released from prison in April 2006 for shooting his ex-girlfriend in 2003.

Boxers No Longer the Richest Athletes
Sep 28th 2011, 13:46

Professional athletes are making more money than ever before ... but boxers - on a relative basis - are losing ground. Sure, Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao are well compensated for their one or two fights a year, but there's a huge dropoff after them.

20 years ago, four of the top seven athletes in the Forbes ranking of the 20 highest paid athletes were boxers, with Evander Holyfield and Mike Tyson occupying the top two slots. This year, Mayweather missed the cut due to inactivity so Pacquiao was the only fighter to crack the top 50! Pacman's estimated $25 million put him in a tie at #24.

Ward-Froch Super Six Final Postponed
Sep 28th 2011, 12:46

Andre Ward was scheduled to face Carl Froch on Oct. 29 in Atlantic City, N.J. in the finals of the Super Six super middleweight tournament. Unfortunately, Ward suffered a cut above his right eye while sparring that required seven stitches so the fight has been rescheduled for Dec. 17. The bout will still be televised by Showtime and take place at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. Ticketholders can either attend on Dec. 17 or get a refund at the point of purchase.

The Death of Arturo Gatti
Sep 27th 2011, 10:02

Jul 31 2009

Former champ and fan favorite Arturo Gatti was found dead in his room at a seaside hotel in Porto de Galihnas, Brazil on July 11, 2009. Gatti, 37, had arrived at the resort the previous day with his Brazilian wife and 1-year-old son. Gatti's wife, 23-year-old Amanda Rodrigues, was initially jailed (though never formally charged with any crime) as the only suspect in the case.

Latest Development:
Gatti Death Ruled Suicide; Wife Released
Thursday July 30, 2009
The Arturo Gatti case has taken another unexpected turn with his death - originally considered a homicide - now ruled a suicide and his wife - originally jailed as the only suspect in the case - now released from prison in Brazil.

What exactly changed? It's hard to say. The lead investigator, Paulo Alberes, could only confirm that police had determined the case was a suicide but offered no new details. The judge who ordered the release of Gatti's wife, Ildete Verissimo de Lima, went as far as to write that the investigation "excludes the possibility of murder".

Really? So this case went from murder as the only possible explanation to excluding even the possibility of murder?

Gatti's wife, Amanda Rodrigues, believes the former champ may have been suicidal because he was afraid she was going to leave him. The couple engaged in a loud, public argument the night before Gatti was found dead.

It appears as if fight fans may never learn what really happened in Gatti's hotel room in Porto de Galinhas, Brazil on July 11. If Amanda Rodrigues is truly innocent, then justice was done when she walked out of prison as a free woman. If not, then the 23-year-old former stripper just got away with murder.

Previous Developments:
Gatti: Did He Commit Suicide?
Sunday July 19, 2009
According to a Brazilian newspaper, which claims to have obtained a copy of the coroner's initial findings, an autopsy indicates Arturo Gatti may have committed suicide ... or may have been accidentally killed ... or may have been murdered. So much for the autopsy helping to clear things up.

Every new piece of information on this case raises more questions, with the police investigation, autopsy report and Rodrigues all putting forth conflicting accounts of what may have actually transpired.

Gatti's Wife Proclaims Innocence
Thursday July 16, 2009
The body of Arturo Gatti is being returned from Brazil for a funeral to be held in a church in the Little Italy section of Montreal. An autopsy report will be released within the next few days.

That much seems to be fact. Everything else about the death of Gatti remains shrouded in mystery and confusion.

See what Gatti's 23-year-old wife, Amanda Rodrigues, has to say about the death of her husband. For what it's worth, Gatti met Rodrigues at the New York City strip club Scores and friends report that that the couple fought frequently.

Arturo Gatti Found Dead in Brazil Hotel
Sunday July 12, 2009
Former champ and fan favorite Arturo Gatti was found dead in his room at a seaside hotel in Porto de Galihnas, Brazil. Gatti, 37, had arrived at the resort the previous day with his Brazilian wife and 1-year-old son. Police are investigating the cause of death but 'foul play' is reportedly suspected. Gatti's wife and son were unhurt.

The Fighter: Fact vs. Fiction
Sep 27th 2011, 10:02

The Fighter gets a lot of its facts about the career of Micky Ward right, including several fight sequences which are amazing in their accuracy and attention to detail. In other places, the film takes liberties with the historical record, some for dramatic effect and others for no apparent reason whatsoever. Here's what we have identified as inaccurate in The Fighter:

* The movie has Ward being on a losing skid coming into the Mike Mungin fight in 1988. In reality, Ward was 18-1 and on a four fight winning streak heading into the Mungin fight. Ward's four fight losing streak mentioned in the movie actually took place in 1990-1991.

* The movie makes a big deal out of Ward being outweighed by 20 pounds in his fight with Mungin. In real life, Ward weighed in at 136.5 and Mungin at 145, an 8.5 pound difference.

* The movie depicts Ward taking a terrible beating in the Mungin fight. In reality, the fight went the full ten rounds and Mungin won by very narrow decision: 96-93, 95-94, 95-94.

* The movie mentions a number of Ward opponents - Manetti, Collins and Hernandez - during one montage. In reality, Ward never fought anyone by those names.

* The movie makes it seem like Ward's upset of Alfonso Sanchez secured his title shot against Shea Neary. In reality, Ward beat Sanchez on April 12, 1997 and faced Neary on March 11, 2000, almost three years later and with six other fights in between (in which Ward went 4-2).

* The movie has Ward's career record as 30-7 with 20 KOs as he enters the ring to fight Neary. In reality, his record was 34-9 with 25 KOs. What did the filmmakers gain by making this change?

* The movie has Ward and Neary both weighing 146 pounds. Ward weighed in at 140, Neary at 139. Again, what was gained by making these changes?

* The movie has Ward's mom, Alice Ward, sitting at ringside with his girlfriend Charlene for the Neary fight. In reality, Ward's mom was not present at that fight.

* The movie has Ward being knocked down in round three of the Neary fight. In reality, Ward was never knocked down during the Neary fight.

* The movie has Ward hopelessly behind on the scorecards when he rallies to KO Neary in round eight. In reality, HBO's Harold Lederman had Neary ahead 67-66 entering the eighth round.

* Finally, and most frustratingly to fight fans, the movie makes a big deal out of Ward's fight with Neary being for the world title. In reality, it was for the WBU (World Boxing Union) title. No one considers the WBU beltholder to be the true world champion. Neary, who fought exclusively in the U.K. and Ireland, won the vacant WBU title by defeating Darryl Tyson, who "earned" his shot at the title by getting stopped by Oscar De La Hoya in two rounds.

Boxing History
Sep 26th 2011, 10:02

Defined broadly as two people punching each other, boxing is arguably the oldest of all sports. It is rules, however, which separate "boxing" from simply "fighting".

The ancient Greeks are generally credited with being the first to institute rules and make boxing a true sport. Many historians cite the inclusion of boxing in the Olympic games as early as 688 B.C. as the sport's birth date.

Boxing grew in stature during Roman times, with contestants often wearing fist coverings which could result in battles to the death. While boxing saw its popularity decline after the fall of Rome, it was destined to make a big comeback.
