Ouch! Incredible Photo Captures Brutal Knockout Punch
Apr 30th 2012, 23:07

Tony Pietrantonio is a light heavyweight from Youngstown, Ohio with a career record of 7-9. On Saturday night, Pietrantoni was knocked out in the third round by Lavarn Harvell on the undercard of the Chad Dawson-Bernard Hopkins title fight. The fight itself would have been quickly forgotten ... except that photographer Tim Shaffer captured the knockout punch in a photo that has to be seen to be believed:

Lavarn Harvell Knockout Punch Smashes Tony Pietrantonio's Face - from International Business Times

It will come as no surprise that Pietrantonio was unconscious before he hit the canvas. The good news is that he seemed to be fine a few minutes later and left the ring under his own power.

Betting on Boxing
Apr 30th 2012, 11:01

Wagering on Boxing
Wagering is accepted on most major bouts held throughout the world.

Wagering procedures require players to lay or take Money Odds on the fighter of their choice. Players can also place a bet on the number of rounds the fight will last.

Example
Fighter.............................Odds
Muhammad Ali............... -700
Mike Tyson..................... +550
Draw............................. +1200
Total Rounds.................... 5 ½

The minus (-) indicates the favorite. Ali is a 7-to-1 favorite.

The plus (+) indicates the underdog. Tyson is a 5 ½-to-1 underdog.

In this (hypothetical) example, if you wish to wager on Ali, you must lay equivalents of 700 to win 100. A $70 winning wager on Ali will win $10 for a total payback of $80. It does not matter when or how Ali wins, just that he is the official winner.

If Tyson should win, a $10 wager on him would win $55 for a total payback of $65.

If the fight ends in a draw, a $10 wager on the fight to end in a draw would win $120 for a total payback of $130. If a draw is on the board as one of the options to wager, only those who bet on a draw are winners. If betting on a draw was not available, whether or not bets to win are refunded depends on individual bookmaker rules.

The Total Rounds listed on a fight represents the total number of completed rounds. The halfway point of a round is at exactly one minute and thirty second. 5½ rounds would be one minute and thirty seconds of the 6th round. When betting on the total rounds that a fight will last, you must take the OVER or the UNDER. Regardless of who is declared the winner, the round in which the fight ends is the final round. Using the above example, if Tyson is knocked out more than halfway through 6th round, all bets on the OVER would be considered winners.

General Rules for Betting on Boxing
All matches must start within 7 days of originally scheduled time for wagers to have action.

A boxing match is declared official after the bell starting the first round has rung.

In most cases, if the number of scheduled rounds in a fight is changed, all bets will be "No Action".

A wager on a fighter to win by "KO" wins if the selected fighter wins by KO, TKO, or DQ.

Dawson Outpoints Hopkins in Dull Rematch
Apr 29th 2012, 23:59

Former champ Chad Dawson took a twelve round majority decision from 47-year-old WBC light heavyweight champ Bernard Hopkins in a rematch of their controversial meeting last October. Their first bout was ruled a second-round TKO for Dawson - later changed to a no contest - after Hopkins was tossed to the canvas and hurt his shoulder. The pairing of Dawson and Hopkins promised a dull fight with lots of wrestling and clinching and head-butting from Hopkins ... and that's exactly what it produced. A Hopkins headbutt opened a cut on the side of Dawson's eye in round four. There's really not much more to say about the fight. Dawson did enough to win but was not terribly impressive ... though no one ever looks good against Hopkins. And Hopkins, at this point in his career, throws one punch at a time and then lunges in head first to tie up his opponent. Ugly. Two judges got it right at 117-111 for Dawson while the third judge - Luis Rivera - somehow scored the bout even at 114-114.

Punch stats underscore just how little action there was with Dawson landing 151 of 431 punches (35%) to only 106 of 400 (26%) for Hopkins.

After the bout, Dawson, 29, called out super middleweight champion Andre Ward. Hopkins, who - as always - believed he won the fight, left the ring before being interviewed. Hopkins is a future Hall of Famer and remains an amazing physical specimen ... for a 47-year-old. He has nothing left to prove in the ring and should retire ... but he probably won't.

On the undercard, undefeated American heavyweight Seth Mitchell survived a rocky first round before storming back to stop Chazz Witherspoon in round three.

The Fighter: Fact vs. Fiction
Apr 27th 2012, 11:01

The Fighter gets a lot of its facts about the career of Micky Ward right, including several fight sequences which are amazing in their accuracy and attention to detail. In other places, the film takes liberties with the historical record, some for dramatic effect and others for no apparent reason whatsoever. Here's what we have identified as inaccurate in The Fighter:

* The movie has Ward being on a losing skid coming into the Mike Mungin fight in 1988. In reality, Ward was 18-1 and on a four fight winning streak heading into the Mungin fight. Ward's four fight losing streak mentioned in the movie actually took place in 1990-1991.

* The movie makes a big deal out of Ward being outweighed by 20 pounds in his fight with Mungin. In real life, Ward weighed in at 136.5 and Mungin at 145, an 8.5 pound difference.

* The movie depicts Ward taking a terrible beating in the Mungin fight. In reality, the fight went the full ten rounds and Mungin won by very narrow decision: 96-93, 95-94, 95-94.

* The movie mentions a number of Ward opponents - Manetti, Collins and Hernandez - during one montage. In reality, Ward never fought anyone by those names.

* The movie makes it seem like Ward's upset of Alfonso Sanchez secured his title shot against Shea Neary. In reality, Ward beat Sanchez on April 12, 1997 and faced Neary on March 11, 2000, almost three years later and with six other fights in between (in which Ward went 4-2).

* The movie has Ward's career record as 30-7 with 20 KOs as he enters the ring to fight Neary. In reality, his record was 34-9 with 25 KOs. What did the filmmakers gain by making this change?

* The movie has Ward and Neary both weighing 146 pounds. Ward weighed in at 140, Neary at 139. Again, what was gained by making these changes?

* The movie has Ward's mom, Alice Ward, sitting at ringside with his girlfriend Charlene for the Neary fight. In reality, Ward's mom was not present at that fight.

* The movie has Ward being knocked down in round three of the Neary fight. In reality, Ward was never knocked down during the Neary fight.

* The movie has Ward hopelessly behind on the scorecards when he rallies to KO Neary in round eight. In reality, HBO's Harold Lederman had Neary ahead 67-66 entering the eighth round.

* Finally, and most frustratingly to fight fans, the movie makes a big deal out of Ward's fight with Neary being for the world title. In reality, it was for the WBU (World Boxing Union) title. No one considers the WBU beltholder to be the true world champion. Neary, who fought exclusively in the U.K. and Ireland, won the vacant WBU title by defeating Darryl Tyson, who "earned" his shot at the title by getting stopped by Oscar De La Hoya in two rounds.

Did you notice any other historical inaccuracies? If so, please share them with us!

Dicky Eklund vs. Sugar Ray Leonard: Judge for yourself whether or not Eklund actually knocked Leonard down on July 18, 1978. Go to 10:00 toward the end of the video.

Micky vs. Marky: The Same Fight Twice: Scenes from The Fighter spliced side-by-side with footage from the actual Ward-Neary fight. Update: Video no longer available due to copyright issues.
