Amateur Boxing Rules
Feb 28th 2012, 11:03

(6) No contest. A bout may be terminated by the referee inside the scheduled distance owing to a material happening outside the responsibility of the boxers, or the control of the referee, such as the ring becoming damaged, the failure of the lighting supply, exceptional weather conditions, etc. In such circumstances the bout shall be declared “no contest” and in the case of championships, the jury shall decide the necessary further action.

(7) Win by walkover. Where the boxer presents themselves in the ring fully attired for boxing and the opponent fails to appear after the opponent’s name has been called out by the public address system, the bell sounded and a maximum period of two minutes has elapsed, the referee shall declare the first boxer to be the winner by a walkover. The referee shall first inform the judges to mark their score cards accordingly, collect them and then summon the boxer to the center of the ring. After the decision is announced, the referee raises the boxer’s hand as the winner.
(a) For medical eliminations determined by a medical doctor and administrative eliminations, such as a boxer not having his USA Boxing passbook, not having the properly filled out entry forms, parents approval for minors, etc, the winning boxer may enter the ring for the announcement of the verdict but shall not be required to be in proper boxing attire. The official in charge or tournament administrator should endeavor to inform the affected boxer as soon as possible.

(8) A draw (AIBA dual matches only). Two clubs or two nations in a friendly dual match may agree to a draw decision when the majority of the judges scored the competition equally. Likewise, an accidental injury in the first round may result in a draw in dual matches.

Article VII, Section 107.9 -- Score Cards

(1) Scorecards from each competition will be submitted to the LBC’s designated officer within 10 days following the event and will be kept on file for one year.

(2) Scores can be obtained from the Chief of Officials after the session, with judges’ names confidential.

Boxing History
Feb 28th 2012, 11:03

Defined broadly as two people punching each other, boxing is arguably the oldest of all sports. It is rules, however, which separate "boxing" from simply "fighting".

The ancient Greeks are generally credited with being the first to institute rules and make boxing a true sport. Many historians cite the inclusion of boxing in the Olympic games as early as 688 B.C. as the sport's birth date.

Boxing grew in stature during Roman times, with contestants often wearing fist coverings which could result in battles to the death. While boxing saw its popularity decline after the fall of Rome, it was destined to make a big comeback.

2012 U.S. Olympic Boxing Trials
Feb 27th 2012, 11:03

Dec 31 2011

With the 2012 U.S. Olympic Boxing Trials now complete, ten American boxers are one step closer to representing the United States in the 2012 Olympic Games. In order to qualify to compete in London, each fighter still needs a top ten showing (top six for the heavyweight and super heavyweight divisions) in the 2011 AIBA World Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan (September 22 - October 10).

Here are the results of the Finals of the 2012 U.S. Olympic Boxing Trials in each weight class:

108 lbs: Erros Correa, San Jose, CA, dec. Santos Vasquez, Sparks, NV, 22-18
114 lbs: Rau'shee Warren, Cincinnati, OH, dec. Shawn Simpson, Chicago IL., 31-18
123 lbs: Joseph Diaz Jr., El Monte, CA, dec. O'Shanique Foster, Orange, TX, 17-14
132 lbs: Jose Ramirez, Avenal, CA, dec. Raynell Williams, Cleveland, OH, 21-16
141 lbs: Jamel Herring, Coram, NY, dec. Pedro Sosa, Bronx, NY, 15-10
152 lbs: Errol Spence, Desoto, TX, dec. Amir Imam, Albany, NY, 24-19
165 lbs: Jesse Hart, Philadelphia, PA, dec. Luis Arias, Milwaukee, WI, 21-6
178 lbs: Marcus Browne, Staten Island, NY, dec. Siju Shabazz, Las Cruces, NM, 14-12
201 lbs: Michael Hunter, Las Vegas, NV, dec. Joseph Williams, Queens, NY, 28-17
201+ lbs: Lenroy Thompson, Lenexa, KS, dec. Laron Mitchell, San Francisco, CA, 21-9

The U.S. has won more medals in boxing than any other country in Olympic history (108) ... but only one Gold in the past three Olympics (Andre Ward, 2004) and a single Bronze medal at the 2008 Games (Deontay Wilder).

Two of this team's best hopes for Olympic Gold are Jose Ramirez, who has won five consecutive USA boxing national titles, and Rau'shee Warren, who has now made the Olympic team three consecutive times.

Joe Zanders, the national coach for USA Boxing, will be the head coach of the 2012 U.S. Olympic Boxing Team.

Povetkin Narrowly Outpoints Huck to Retain Belt
Feb 26th 2012, 19:02

Undefeated Alexander Povetkin retained his WBA heavyweight belt with a much tougher than anticipated points win over WBO cruiserweight champ Marco Huck. Povetkin looked good early but tired as the fight wore on and was almost out on his feet when the bell rang to end the twelfth and final round. Povetkin won an Olympic gold medal in 2004 but after this fight it's easy to see why former trainer Teddy Atlas kept him away from the Klitschkos ... he would've been destroyed. Despite giving up 20 pounds, Puck rocked Povetkin with right hands on a number of occasions and looked like he did enough to earn the decision. The judges, however, scored the bout for Povetkin 116-113, 116-112 and 114-114 even.

Huck looked comfortable as a heavyweight and deserves a rematch, but the WBA - in its infinite wisdom - has installed former champ Hasim Rahman as Povetkin's next mandatory defense. How did Rahman 'earn' that position? Good question. The 39-year-old Rahman hasn't faced a world class opponent since being stopped by Wladimir Klitschko in 2008 and really hasn't won a meaningful bout since knocking out Lennox Lewis to win the heavyweight title in 2001!

Lineal Heavyweight Champions
Feb 23rd 2012, 11:03

With all the title belts floating around, boxing fans tend to be most interested in the 'lineal' champion in any particular weight class. A fighter can only truly become the lineal champ by beating the previous lineal champ, or being "the man that beat the man". In the event the prior lineal champ has permanently retired (or, for non-heavyweights, permanently left the weight class), there is no definitive process to recognize a new lineal champ, but it generally requires a fighter to become universally acclaimed as the best in that class.

50 Most Exciting Boxers
Feb 23rd 2012, 11:03

Bleacher Report recently posted a slideshow of their ranking of the 100 Most Exciting Athletes of All Time. Lists of this sort are almost entirely subjective and this one is no exception. While it's fun to scroll through the names (almost all of which are contemporary athletes), I have a big problem with the inclusion of only three boxers! While those three - Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson and Manny Pacquaio - certainly belong on the list, there are so many others that were overlooked.

So we've gone ahead and compiled our own list of the 50 Most Exciting Boxers of the Past 50 Years. This is not a pound-for-pound list. These are not necessarily the most talented or accomplished boxers, but the most crowd pleasing. The fighters who made every fight a must see fight.

1. Mike Tyson
2. Manny Pacquiao
3. Muhammad Ali
4. Roberto Duran
5. Arturo Gatti
6. Tommy Hearns
7. Matthew Saad Muhammad
8. Naseem Hamed
9. Erik Morales
10. Diego Corrales
11. Evander Holyfield
12. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
13. Sugar Ray Leonard
14. Julian Jackson
15. Marvin Hagler
16. Joe Frazier
17. Bobby Chacon
18. Micky Ward
19. George Foreman
20. Michael Carbajal
21. Tommy Morrison
22. Roy Jones Jr.
23. Kostya Tszyu
24. Carlos Zarate
25. Danny Lopez
26. Israel Vazquez
27. Sonny Liston
28. Aaron Pryor
29. Carlos Monzon
30. Nigel Benn
31. Ruben Olivares
32. Vinny Pazienza
33. Ike Ibeabuchi
34. Salvador Sanchez
35. Ray Mancini
36. Pipino Cuevas
37. Rafael Marquez
38. Alexis Arguello
39. Marco Antonio Barrera
40. Iran Barkley
41. Jeff Fenech
42. Ricky Hatton
43. Livingstone Bramble
44. Ricardo Lopez
45. Rafael Ruelas
46. Earnie Shavers
47. Edwin Valero
48. Greg Haugen
49. Felix Trinidad
50. Johnny Tapia

Just missing the top 50: Shane Mosley, Antonio Margarito, Ricardo Mayorga, Fernando Vargas, Miguel Cotto, David Tua, Dwight Qawi, Jeff Chandler, John Duddy.

NOTE: If this had been a list of the most exciting boxers of all-time, then we would have surely found room for the likes of Jack Dempsey, Sugar Ray Robinson, Rocky Marciano, Stanley Ketchel, Willie Pep, Joe Louis, Rocky Graziano and Jake LaMotta.

Who do you consider to be the most exciting boxer since 1960? And who's missing from our list? Vote in our poll. And tell us who's missing from our Top 50 ... and who doesn't belong on the list at all.
