Final Post: It's Been a Great Run, Thanks for Your Support!
Feb 28th 2013, 14:09

Sad news to share today as this will be my final post on the About Boxing site. After nearly 15 years as your Boxing Guide, has concluded that the Boxing site no longer meets the business needs of the company.

While it's been a pleasure covering boxing for About.com, what I'll miss the most is the interaction with the amazingly passionate community of fight fans that have visited and contributed to this site since the late 1990s. You never ceased to dazzle me with your knowledge, humble me with your kind words and support, and startle me with your - at times - shockingly colorful commentary on the issues of the day.

If you'd like to continue to follow and voice your opinions on the fight game, please visit me at ACEonSports.com where I will be sharing my thoughts on boxing (and other sports as well). Thank you, it's been a privilege.

Mike Tyson Fight-by-Fight Career Record

Mike Tyson - Photo Gallery - 1986-1989

May 1, 2002 - "I'm just like you. I enjoy the forbidden fruits in life, too. I think it's un-American not to go out with a woman, not to be with a beautiful woman, not to get my dick sucked ... It's just what I said before, everybody in this country is a big fucking liar. (The media) tells people ... that this person did this and this person did that and then we find out that we're just human and we find out that Michael Jordan cheats on his wife just like everybody else and that we all cheat on our fucking wife in one way or another either emotionally, physically or sexually or one way."

May 1, 2002 - "There's no one perfect. We're always gonna do that. Jimmy Swaggart is lascivious, Tyson is lascivious -- but we're not criminally, at least I'm not, criminally lascivious. You know what I mean. I may like to fornicate more than other people -- it's just who I am. I sacrifice so much of my life, can I at least get laid? I mean, I been robbed of my most of my money, can I at least get head without the people wanting to harass me and wanting to throw me in jail?"

May 1, 2002 - "I feel like sometimes that I was born, that I'm not meant for this society because everyone here is a fucking hypocrite. Everybody says they believe in God but they don't do God's work. Everybody counteracts what God is really about. If Jesus was here, do you think Jesus would show me any love? Do you think Jesus would love me? I'm a Muslim, but do you think Jesus would love me ... I think Jesus would have a drink with me and discuss ... why you acting like that? Now, he would be cool. He would talk to me. No Christian ever did that and said in the name of Jesus even ... They'd throw me in jail and write bad articles about me and then go to church on Sunday and say Jesus is a wonderful man and he's coming back to save us. But they don't understand that when he comes back, that these crazy greedy capitalistic men are gonna kill him again."

June 8, 2002 - Tyson is knocked out by Lennox Lewis in the eight round in Memphis, Tennnessee.

Jan. 13, 2003 - Tyson is divorced from his wife Monica, with whom he has two children.

Feb. 22, 2003 - Tyson knocks out Clifford Etienne in the first round in Memphis, Tennnessee.

May 28, 2003 - In an interview, boxer Tyson denounces Desiree Washington as "just a lying, reptilian, monstrous, young lady. I just hate her guts. She put me in that state where, I don't know, I really wish I did now. Now I really do want to rape her and her fucking mama."

June 21, 2003 - Tyson allegedly beats up two autograph seekers in the lobby of the Brooklyn Marriott.

July 11, 2003 - A bodyguard files suit against Tyson, claiming that the boxer punched him twice in the face, breaking his left orbital bone.

Aug. 1, 2003 - Tyson files for bankruptcy in New York.

Sept. 13, 2003 - Tyson attends a charity benefit at Michael Jackson's Neverland Ranch. When asked why he came, Tyson confesses "Because I've got nothing else to do."

Sept. 21, 2003 - Rap artist 50 Cent purchases Tyson's 48,000-square-foot mansion in Farmington, Connecticut for $4.1 million.

June 28, 2004 - In an interview, Tyson announces that since declaring bankruptcy "I've got nowhere to live. I've been crashing with friends, literally sleeping in shelters. Unsavoury characters are giving me money and I'm taking it. I need it. The drug dealers, they sympathise with me. They see me as some sort of pathetic character ... I know I was a tough, bad-ass talking fighter, but I ain't no mob figure. I did my time for the rape. I paid my money to Las Vegas. I paid my dues. I ain't the same person I was when I bit that guy's ear off."

July 30, 2004 - Tyson is knocked out in the fourth round by Danny Williams in Louisville, Kentucky.

June 11, 2005 - Tyson fails to come out for the seventh round against Kevin McBride in Washington, D.C.. After the fight, Tyson said "I don't have the stomach for this anymore. I most likely won't fight anymore. I'm not going to disrespect the sport by losing to this caliber of fighter".

Mayweather Picks Guerrero; First of Six Fights on Showtime?
Feb 25th 2013, 12:19

As expected, Floyd Mayweather Jr. has selected WBC interim welterweight champ Robert Guerrero as his May 4 opponent at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. What was unexpected was the announcement that Mayweather would be leaving HBO for a big revenue-sharing deal with Showtime. Guerrero believes Mayweather - now 36 - is "ripe for the picking". Oddsmakers obviously feel otherwise as Guerrero opened as an 11-1 underdog.

The Guerrero fight is the first of what was reported to be up to six Showtime fights over the next 30 months. There's no shot Mayweather will suddenly start fighting that frequently as he has fought exactly twice in the past 30 months and his last six fights span a total of six years. Nevertheless, imagine how good it would be for boxing if it's pound-for-pound number one to be more active and to fight the opponents he should be fighting. Again, it's never going to happen, but if Mayweather were to face the following six opponents, he would lose the label of being more concerned with protecting his undefeated record than facing the best opposition. And, if he were to go 6-0, Mayweather could finally make a legitimate case for what he believes he has already achieved -- being the greatest of all-time.

Dream Half Dozen for Mayweather
Robert Guerrero
Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez
Manny Pacquiao
Sergio Martinez
Gennady Golovkin

Current Heavyweight Rankings
Feb 25th 2013, 11:04

Updated February 25, 2013

The heavyweight division has always been and will always be the glamour division of the sport ... but it's kind of a mess at the present time. Lennox Lewis was the (more-or-less) undisputed champ ... but then he retired. Then Vitali Klitschko seemed to be on his way to becoming the (more-or-less) undisputed champ ... but then he retired too ... for nearly four years. Plus all the top pound-for-pound fighters in the sport are campaigning in lower weight categories. Nevertheless, the big money and the majority of the media attention continues to focus on the big boys. Accordingly, it seems appropriate to have an in-depth look at who's who in today's heavyweight division and rank them accordingly. Plenty of magazines and web sites will give their top ten. Mike Tyson Fight-by-Fight Career Record

Mike Tyson - Photo Gallery - 1986-1989

Jan. 29, 2000 - Tyson stops Julius Francis in the second round in Manchester, England.

Feb. 8, 2000 - Tyson reaches settlement with two women who alleged he assaulted them at a Washington restaurant. They accused Tyson of grabbing one woman and requesting a sexual relationship, and that he swore at the other woman. They asked for a total of $7.5 million in damages. Lawyers for both sides agreed to keep terms of the settlement confidential.

May 19, 2000 - Tyson is accused by a topless dancer in a Las Vegas nightclub of punching her in the chest and hurling expletives at her. Police were called to the scene, but after interviewing witnesses, including Tyson himself, they decided not to press charges.

June 24, 2000 - In bout with Lou Savarese, Tyson knocked the referee down in order to keep punching Savarese after the bout was stopped.

June 27, 2000 - The former topless dancer is said to be seeking unspecified damages in a lawsuit filed against Tyson in connection with the May incident. The lawsuit has not been brought to court.

Aug. 22, 2000 - Tyson was fined $187,500 for his behavior after his 38-second victory over Savarase but escaped a ban from fighting again in Britain.

Sept. 14, 2000 - "I'm on the Zoloft to keep me from killing y'all ... It has really messed me up, and I don't want to be taking it, but they are concerned about the fact that I am a violent person, almost an animal. And they only want me to be an animal in the ring."

Oct. 20, 2000 - Tyson defeats Andrew Golota. After the fight, Tyson is forced to submit a urine sample, which tests positive for marijuana. Michigan commission changes result to a No Contest.

Oct. 13, 2001 - Tyson defeats Brian Nielsen in seven rounds in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Dec. 18, 2001 - Police investigate claims that Tyson assaulted an ex-boxer outside a New York nightclub. Retired heavyweight Mitchell Rose filed the complaint, claiming Tyson attacked him after he made a joke about the former champion's entourage of women.

Jan. 2, 2002 - Tyson checked out of a Havana hotel after witnesses said he tossed glass Christmas ornaments at journalists trying to interview him. There were no reports of injuries, arrests or serious damage.

Jan. 22, 2002 - A press conference to announce the April 6 Tyson - Lennox Lewis fight breaks into an all-out brawl. Tyson later admits to having bitten Lewis on the leg during the melee.

Jan. 22, 2002 - Police in Las Vegas said that they found evidence supporting a woman's claim she was raped by Tyson. The local district attorney's office says it will decide whether to charge Tyson.

Jan. 29, 2002 - "Just to let you know, I'm crazy, but I'm not crazy like that. I might want to have sex in a crazy place, but I don't want to kill or rape nobody or hurt nobody."

Jan. 29, 2002 - "I'm not Mother Teresa, but I'm not Charles Manson either."

May 1, 2002 - "It's no doubt I am going to win this fight and I feel confident about winning this fight. I normally don't do interviews with women unless I fornicate with them. So you shouldn't talk anymore ... Unless you want to, you know."

May 1, 2002 - "I wish that you guys had children so I could kick them in the fucking head or stomp on their testicles so you could feel my pain because that's the pain I have waking up every day."

Article VII, Section 107.7 -- Awarding of Points

(1) Directives. In awarding points, the following directives shall be observed.

(a) Concerning blows.
(1) Scoring blows. During each round, a judge shall assess the respective scores of each boxer according to the number of blows obtained by each. Each blow to have scoring value must, without being blocked or guarded, land directly with the knuckle part of the closed glove of either hand on any part of the front or sides of the head or body above the belt. Blows landing as above described are scoring hits. The value of blows scored in a rally of infighting shall be assessed at the end of such rally and shall be credited to the boxer who has had the better of the exchanges according to the degree of said boxer’s superiority.
(2) Non-scoring blows. Non-scoring blows are blows which are struck by a boxer:
(a) while infringing any of the rules;
(b) with the side, heel, or inside of the glove or with the open glove or any part other than the knuckle part of the closed glove;
(c) which lands on the arms;
(d) which merely connect, without the weight of the body or shoulder.

(b) Concerning fouls â€" “W,” “X” and “J.”
(1) There are three symbols the Judge uses to annotate fouls on the score card â€" “W,” “X” and “J”.
(a) W â€" Referee’s Warning. If the referee issues a “warning” against one (or both) of the boxers, the judge will indicate a “W” on the score card in the column of the offending boxer. The judge will also note the reason for the warning (i.e. W - holding).
(b) X â€" Judge disagrees with referee’s warning. If the judge concludes “unequivocally” that the warning was inappropriate or in error, the judge will annotate an “X” in the appropriate column and indicate the reason for the warning (i.e. X â€" low blow). In this case, there will be no addition to the number of scoring blows awarded the “fouled” boxer. It must be noted if the judge did not see the foul or was unsure if it was a foul, the judge will accept the advice of the referee and issue a “W” for warning.
(c) J â€" Judge’s warning. If the judge detects a foul, apparently unnoticed by the referee, the judge may impose a warning by writing a “J” on the score card in the column of the offending boxer. The judge will also note the reason for the judge’s warning (i.e. J â€" ducking). A “J” warning carries the same penalty as a “W” warning.

(c) How to administer the penalty (foul).
(1) The purpose of using a tally counter or similar scoring device is to mimic the computer scoring system. Administering the penalty (foul) will also mimic the computer scoring system. These are the rules a judge must use to administer the penalty (foul).
(a) “W” - Two scoring blows will be added to the round score of the FOULED boxer. This will be done for each “W” occurring in that round.
(b) “X” - In this case no scoring blows will be added.
(c) “J” - Two scoring blows will be added to the round score of the FOULED boxer. This will be done for each “J” occurring in that round.
(d) When using tally counters or similar scoring devices, there will be no “offsetting” fouls. Two scoring blows will be added to the round score of any boxer fouled.
(e) The judge must immediately note the foul in the remarks column of the scorecard, when given by the referee. A judges warning must be noted prior to the beginning of the next round.

(d) Concerning the award of scoring blows.
(1) At the end of the bout the scores for each of the rounds will be totaled and the winner will be the one with the higher score.
(2) If, at the end of a bout, having marked each round, the judge finds that the boxers are equal in scoring blows after totaling the scorecard, the judge is required to select a winner. The judge must record the criteria for the selection of the winner. The judge must record the criteria for the selection of the winner in the remarks column next to the scorecard total of the winner. The criteria for selecting a winner is as follows:
(a) Who has done most of the leading off or was the effective aggressor? If equal, in that respect:
(b) Who has shown the better defense (blocking, parrying, ducking, side-stepping, etc.) by which the opponent’s attacks have been made to miss? If still equal:
(c) Who boxed cleaner and had the better style?
(d) A winner must be nominated in all USA Boxing competitions (in AIBA dual matches, a draw decision may be awarded).
(3) Knockdowns. No extra points shall be awarded for a knockdown.
