Povetkin Hammers Faded Rahman in Two
Sep 30th 2012, 16:23

There isn't a fight fan in the world that considers Alexander Povetkin the best (or even second best) heavyweight in the world, yet the WBA still recognizes him as champion. Hasim Rahman is 39 and hasn't beaten a fighter remotely resembling a contender since 2005, yet the WBA still had him ranked as the mandatory challenger for Povetkin's belt. Tells you all you need to know about the WBA.

As expected, Povetkin destroyed Rahman in two one-sided rounds in Hamburg, Germany. Rahman's legs wobbled with the first punch Povetkin landed in round one and he had no answer for Povetkin's power shots in rounds two. Referee Gustavo Padilla mercifully waved off the mismatch at 1:46 of round two with Rahman hanging on the ropes and virtually defenseless. Punch stats had Povetkin outlanding Rahman 42-10.

Povetkin, 33, improves to 25-0 with 17 KOs. It's time for him to stop ducking the Klitschkos and fight either Wladimir or Vitali next.

Rahman falls to 50-8-2-1 NC with 41 KOs. He will always be remembered for his one-punch knockout of Lennox Lewis in 2001 ... but he needs to retire. Now.

Current Heavyweight Rankings
Sep 30th 2012, 11:01

Updated September 17, 2012

The heavyweight division has always been and will always be the glamour division of the sport ... but it's kind of a mess at the present time. Lennox Lewis was the (more-or-less) undisputed champ ... but then he retired. Then Vitali Klitschko seemed to be on his way to becoming the (more-or-less) undisputed champ ... but then he retired too ... for nearly four years. Plus all the top pound-for-pound fighters in the sport are campaigning in lower weight categories. Nevertheless, the big money and the majority of the media attention continues to focus on the big boys. Accordingly, it seems appropriate to have an in-depth look at who's who in today's heavyweight division and rank them accordingly. Plenty of magazines and web sites will give their top ten. However, if you really love boxing, then ten is definitely not enough. So here they are -- the top fifty heavyweight fighters in the world today. Let the debates begin!

Hatton Selects Opponent for Comeback
Sep 29th 2012, 15:23

Former champ Ricky Hatton is coming back after 3½ years out of the ring and he's going to test himself in his first fight. Instead of going with an easy opponent, Hatton will face former welterweight beltholder Vyacheslav Senchenko in a 10-round welterweight bout. The fight will take place on Nov. 24 in Hatton's hometown of Manchester, England.

Senchenko, 35, has a career record of 32-1 with 21 KOs. He won the WBA alpha-belt by outpointing Yuriy Nuzhnenko in 2009 and defended his title three times before being stopped on cuts by Paulie Malignaggi in April of this year.

Biggest Controversies
Sep 28th 2012, 11:01

Boxing's scoring system is subjective by nature. Throw in some incompetence, not to mention corruption, and the stage is set for controversy. Here are a few examples (in chronological order):

1. London, 1908: Australia's Reginald "Snowy" Baker, who won Silver at middleweight, was the only non-British boxer to win a medal. Baker, believing that the referee was not impartial, protested his loss in the finals to John Douglas. Sour grapes? Hardly. The referee was Douglas' father!

2. Amsterdam, 1928: Controversial decisions led to brawls among spectators watching the fights. One such brawl came after a disputed decision went against American flyweight Hyman Miller in the first-round. The U.S. boxing team considered withdrawing from the Games but was talked out of it by Douglas MacArthur, who was - at that time - President of the U.S. Olympic Committee.

3. Berlin, 1936: Lightweight Thomas Hamilton-Brown of South Africa, after losing a first-round split decision, went on an eating binge. No big deal, right? Wrong! It was discovered that one of the judges had reversed his scores and Brown was actually the winner ... but he was unable to make weight for his next bout and was disqualified!

4. Los Angeles, 1984
At the 1984 Games, Evander Holyfield represented the United States in the light heavyweight division. In the second round of his semi-final match with Kevin Barry, Holyfield was disqualified. Referee Gligorije Novicic called for a "break", which instructs the fighters to stop punching. Holyfield, apparently, did not hear the call and threw a punch which dropped Barry to the canvas. When Barry was unable to continue, Holyfield was disqualified. A disappointed Holyfield was awarded the bronze medal.

How bad was this decision? Bad enough that the referee later apologized for being out of position when he made the "break" call. Bad enough that Gold medalist Anton Josipovic of Yugoslavia pulled Holyfield to the top of the podium to join him during the medal ceremony.

5. Seoul, 1988
Roy Jones Jr. was a very successful amateur boxer, compiling a record of 121-13. At the 1988 Games, he represented the United States in the light middleweight division. Jones won every round in dominant fashion to reach the finals. The final was no different as Jones outlanded his South Korean opponent Park Si-Hun 86-32. Unfortunately, the judges were either pressured, coerced or bribed to favor the local fighter and awarded Park an indefensible 3- 2 decision. One judge admitted the decision was a mistake and all three judges ended up being suspended.

How bad was this decision? Park reportedly congratulated Jones after the bout and admitted that the decision was wrong. The decision was bad enough that, despite winning only a Silver Medal, Jones was awarded the Val Barker Trophy as Games' most outstanding and stylistic boxer.

The IOC - despite investigating and concluding that three of the judges were wined and dined by Korean officials - allowed the decision to stand.

Amateur Boxing Rules
Sep 27th 2012, 11:01

Article VII, Section 107.8 -- Method of Scoring

(1) A judge is advised to fixate in between the two boxers; do not develop a tendency to study or follow just one of the boxers.

(2) Never rely on past performance, reputations or titles earned by a particular boxer.

(3) Amateur boxing is scored on a point system, not on a round basis.

(4) The winner is decided on the majority of judges, i.e., 5-0, 4-1 or 3-2.

(5) Amateur boxing is scored on a legal scoring blow system not on a round basis.

(6) Decisions.
(a) Types of decisions.
(1) Win on points. At the end of a contest the boxer who has been awarded the decision by a majority of the judges shall be declared the winner.
(a) If both boxers are injured or down simultaneously and cannot continue the contest, the judges shall record the points gained by each boxer up to its termination, and the boxer who was leading on points up to the actual end of the contest shall be declared the winner.
(b) AIDS Stoppage Rule: If both boxers are bleeding or where one boxer is bleeding and the opponent has an open cut or abrasion, the referee may stop the bout and take the boxers to the doctor to be examined. If the bout is stopped the boxer ahead on points shall be the winner.
(2) Win by retirement. If a boxer retires voluntarily owing to injury or other causes, or if a boxer fails to resume boxing immediately after the rest between rounds, the opponent shall be declared the winner. If a boxer retires during the rest between rounds, the referee will immediately notify the jury and the judges of the retirement and the other boxer is declared the winner.
(3) Win by referee stopping contest (RSC).
(a) Outclassed. RSC is a term used to stop a bout when a boxer is outclassed or unfit to continue.
(1) If a boxer, in the opinion of the referee, is being outclassed or is receiving unnecessary and excessive blows, the bout shall be stopped and the opponent declared the winner.
(b) Outscored. RSC-OS is only used with the Computer Scoring System and stops a bout when a boxer is outscored as follows:
(1) If one boxer has a 20-point advantage (for Open and Under 19/Junior men), or a 15-point advantage (for Women and Junior Olympics/Cadets) over their opponent, the bout must be stopped except in the last round, and the boxer with the advantage is declared the winner.
(c) Injury:
(1) If a boxer, in the opinion of the referee, is unfit to continue because of injury or other physical reasons, the bout shall be stopped and the opponent declared the winner. The right to make this decision rests with the referee, who may consult the doctor. Having consulted the doctor, the referee must follow the doctor’s advice.
(2) When a referee calls a doctor into the ring to examine a boxer only these two officials should be present. Coaches should not be allowed into the ring or on the apron.
(3) The ringside physician has the right to request the bout be suspended if the physician thinks, for medical reasons, the bout should not be allowed to continue.
(d) Compulsory Count Limits. When a male boxer has three compulsory counts in the same round or four counts during the same bout, the match must be stopped. When a female boxer has two compulsory counts in the same round or three counts during the same bout, the match must be stopped. A count issued for a harm foul is not included in this number.
(4) RSC(H). If a boxer is down due to head blows, and fails to box within eight to 10 seconds, whichever is applicable, the opponent shall be declared the winner by RSC(H). For more information on awarding RSC(H), see section 107.1.
(5) Win by disqualification. If a boxer is disqualified, the opponent shall be declared the winner. A boxer is automatically disqualified for not making weight or for committing three warnings in a bout. If both boxers are disqualified, the decision shall be announced accordingly. A disqualified boxer is eliminated from the tournament and shall not be entitled to any prize, medal, trophy, honorable award or grading, relating to any stage of the competition in which the boxer has been disqualified.

Poll: Sergio Martinez vs. Saul Alvarez. Who Would Win?
Sep 26th 2012, 12:31

WBC middleweight champ Sergio Martinez easily outboxed Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. for 11 rounds but got knocked down in the final round and barely made it to the final bell. Across town, on the same night, Saul "Canelo" Alvarez looked great in stopping a tough but undersized Josesito Lopez in five rounds to retain his WBC light middleweight title.

Neither Martinez nor Alvarez have a next fight lined up. Both would like a big payday against Floyd Mayweather Jr. but that appears unlikely. What if Martinez and Alvarez were to fight each other? At 22, Alvarez is already a big, strong light middleweight so moving up to 160 - or meeting at a catchweight - should't be an issue.

Who do you think would win this fight? Sergio Martinez or Canelo Alvarez? Vote in our poll.

Sergio Martinez: Fight-by-Fight Career Record
Saul Alvarez: Fight-by-Fight Career Record

Former Heavyweight Champ Corrie Sanders Shot Dead
Sep 26th 2012, 11:35

Corrie Sanders, who knocked out Wladimir Klitschko in 2003 to capture the WBO heavyweight belt, died after being shot by robbers at a restaurant during a family celebration in his native South Africa. Sanders, 46, was shot in the hand and stomach and died hours later in a Pretoria hospital. No one else was injured and no arrests have been made.

Sanders fought professionally from 1989 to 2008 and retired with a record of 42-4 with 31 KOs. In addition to his shocking upset of Klitschko, Sanders also defeated Bert Cooper, Bobby Czyz and Alfred Cole, while losing to Hasim Rahman and Vitali Klitschko.

As a pro, Michael became the first light heavyweight champion to capture the heavyweight title when he outpointed Larry Holmes - who was trying to tie Rocky Marciano's 49-0 record - in 1985. Spinks' final bout was in 1988 when he was knocked out in 91 seconds by Mike Tyson. After his first and only loss, Spinks retired with a record of 31-1 with 21 KOs.

Where Is Michael Spinks Now:
Spinks is the rare world class fighter who left the sport with money and his health and was never lured back into the ring. Spinks was inducted into the Boxing Hall of Fame in 1994 but remains nearly invisible on the boxing scene these days.

The intensely private Spinks lives in a seven-bedroom house - not including the guest house - on a secluded five-acre spread outside Wilmington, Delaware. He remains close with his former promoter, Butch Lewis. On the rare occasions that Spinks is seen in public, it's typically at an event that Lewis is promoting.

Who Is Leon Spinks:
Leon Spinks represented the United States as a light heavyweight boxer in the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal and won the Gold medal. He and Michael Spinks became the first brothers to win Gold medals in the same sport at the same Olympics.

On February 15, 1978, in only his eighth professional fight, Spinks outpointed Muhammad Ali over 15 rounds to capture the world heavyweight title. Spinks lost the title back to Ali just seven months later and his career went into an irreversible tailspin. He last fought in 1995, ending with a pro record of 26-17-3.

Where Is Leon Spinks Now:
Spinks was reportedly homeless just over a decade after winning the heavyweight title. Later, after getting divorced, he briefly lived in a shelter in his native St. Louis. He's been a greeter at Mike Ditka's restaurant in Chicago. He also helped start a gym in Detroit and did assorted odd jobs in California.

More recently, he was living in Columbus, Nebraska and working at a local YMCA and McDonalds. He was also volunteering at an after-school program for youth.

Spinks' son, Cory Spinks, is a former welterweight and junior middleweight world champion. Leon can usually be spotted in or around the corner at each of his son's fights.
