Current Heavyweight Rankings
Aug 30th 2011, 10:01

Aug 27 2011

The heavyweight division has always been and will always be the glamour division of the sport ... but it's kind of a mess at the present time. Lennox Lewis was the (more-or-less) undisputed champ ... but then he retired. Then Vitali Klitschko seemed to be on his way to becoming the (more-or-less) undisputed champ ... but then he retired too ... for nearly four years. Plus all the top pound-for-pound fighters in the sport are campaigning in lower weight categories. Nevertheless, the big money and the majority of the media attention continues to focus on the big boys. Accordingly, it seems appropriate to have an in-depth look at who's who in today's heavyweight division and rank them accordingly. Plenty of magazines and web sites will give their top ten. However, if you really love boxing, then ten is definitely not enough. So here they are -- the top fifty heavyweight fighters in the world today. Let the debates begin!

Mike Tyson Fight-by-Fight Career Record

Mike Tyson - Photo Gallery - 1986-1989

Aug. 31, 1998 - Tyson's Mercedes is rear-ended in Gaithersburg, Maryland. According to subsequent lawsuits, Tyson kicked one driver in the groin and punched another in the face before being restrained by his own bodyguards.

Sept. 2, 1998 - Richard Hardick filed an assault charge against Tyson. Hardick says he was kicked in the groin by Tyson after his car rear-ended a Mercedes driven by Tyson's wife, Monica, on Aug. 31.

Sept. 3, 1998 - Abmielec Saucedo filed a criminal assault against Tyson claiming Tyson punched him in the face as Saucedo talked with another driver following the accident of Aug. 31.

Oct. 13, 1998 - The psychiatric report of Tyson is released. According to doctors who examined him for five days, the report states Tyson is depressed and lacks self-esteem, but is mentally fit to return to boxing. The psychiatrists believe Tyson most likely won't "snap" again as he did when he bit Holyfield.

Oct. 19, 1998 - The Nevada Athletic Commission voted 4-1 to restore Tyson's boxing license, with the lone holdout commissioner James Nave.

Oct. 1998 - "I know I'm going to blow one day ... My life is doomed the way it is. I have no future. I feel bad about my outlook, how I feel about people and society, and that I'll never be part of society the way I should."

Oct. 1998 - "A lot of young women don't know what they're getting themselves into. A lot of them think it's fun, a game ... But they truly don't know what they're into when they lock themselves into a room and engage in sex with a man who knows how to handle a woman."

Nov. 1998 - "I think I'll take a bath in his blood."

Dec. 1, 1998 - Tyson pleads no contest to misdemeanor assault for kicking and punching two motorists involved in the Aug. 31 auto accident in Maryland.

Dec. 1998 - "I'm not much for talking. You know what I do. I put guys in body bags when I'm right."

Dec. 1998 - "The one thing I know, everyone respects the true person and everyone's not true with themselves. All of these people who are heroes, these guys who have been lily white and clean all their lives, if they went through what I went through, they would commit suicide. They don't have the heart that I have. I've lived places they can't defecate in."

Jan. 11, 1999 - "I could sell out Madison Square Garden masturbating."

Jan. 16, 1999 - Tyson knocked out Francois Botha in the fifth round. Tyson admitted to trying to break Botha's arm during the fight

Feb. 5, 1999 - Tyson sentenced to two concurrent two-year sentences for assaulting two motorists after a traffic accident in 1998. Judge Stephen Johnson suspended all but one year of jail time. Tyson was also fined $5,000 and sentenced to two years' probation after his release from jail. The decision could lead to more jail time for violating parole in Indiana.

Feb. 20, 1999 - Tyson was put in an isolation cell after a disturbance at the Montgomery County Detention Center. Several TV stations in Washington reported that Tyson became upset, either in his cell or a break room, and threw a television set. The set narrowly missed jail guards, and there were no injuries. It was later reported that Tyson was taken off anti-depressants two days previous to this incident.

Feb. 26, 1999 - Tyson was allowed to step out of solitary confinement today and won back his privileges following an appeal of a disciplinary ruling, his lawyer said. Paul Kemp said tyson's punishment for throwing a television in a recreation room in jail on Feb. 19 "was reduced to time served and he was restored to regular privileges".

Oct. 23, 1999 - In bout with Orlin Norris, Tyson hit Norris after the bell in the first round and the fight is declared a No Contest.

Nov. 18, 1999 - Members of 24-Carat Ferret Rescue arrive at boxer Tyson's estate in Las Vegas, where they take possession of two ferrets starving to death.

Dec. 10, 1999 - Authorities say they won't charge Tyson with neglecting two ferrets at his Las Vegas home mostly because they don't know who was supposed to be taking care of the animals.

Boxing's Best of the Century
Aug 28th 2011, 10:01

Who knows what it is about the end of every year that compels people to issue a seemingly endless array of lists ranking nearly everything imaginable. Regardless of the topic, there are countless ‘best of’, ‘worst of’ and ‘top tens’ to be found in every newspaper, magazine and website. With this not only being the end of the year, but also the end of a decade AND a millennium, the volume of lists is even more overwhelming than usual.

One such list, which will undoubtedly stir much debate among boxing enthusiasts, is the recently released listing of the best fighters of the 20th century as chosen by a five-member panel for the Associated Press. Presented below are the AP results for fighter of the century, as well as the top fighters in each weight class. Recognizing that there are even more opinions than there are lists, each category also includes a poll so that you can have your own say as to who was the best overall and at each and every weight.

Fighter of Century

1. Sugar Ray Robinson - welterweight and five-time middleweight champion
Record: 175-19-6, 109 KO's; Career: 1940-65, 24 years active.

2. Muhammad Ali - first three-time heavyweight champion
Record: 56-5, 37 KO's; Career: 1960-81, 19 years active.

3. Henry Armstrong - only fighter to hold three titles (featherweight, lightweight and welterweight) simultaneously
Record: 150-21-9, 101 KO's; Career: 1933-45, 13 years active.

4. Joe Louis - defended the heavyweight championship a record 25 times
Record: 68-3, 54 KO's; Career: 1934-51, 14 years active.

5. Willie Pep - featherweight champion who was a brilliant boxer
Record: 230-11-1, 65 KO's; Career: 1940-66, 22 years active.

6. Jack Dempsey - heavyweight champion who participated in several legendary fights
Record: 61-6-8, 50 KO's, 6 ND; Career: 1914-27, 11 years active.

7. Roberto Duran - dominant lightweight of 1970's, who also won titles in three other weight classes
Record: 102-15, 70 KO's; Career: 1967-99, 31 years active.

8. Benny Leonard - master boxer who was lightweight champion
Record: 85-5-5, 69 KO's, 119 ND; Career: 1911-32, 16 years active.

9. Billy Conn - light heavyweight champion who made historic challenge against Joe Louis
Record: 63-11-1, 14 KO's; Career: 1934-48, 11 years active.

10. Harry Greb - middleweight champion and only man ever to beat Gene Tunney
Record: 115-8-3, 51 KO's, 179 ND; Career: 1913-26, 14 years active.

Note: Career denotes years of first and last fights; years active is number of years with at least one fight.

Povetkin Outpoints Chagaev for Bogus Belt
Aug 27th 2011, 19:27

Undefeated heavyweight Alexander Povetkin passed the biggest test of his professional career with a 12-round unanimous decision win (117-113 twice and 116-112) over former beltholder Ruslan Chagaev. The win is totally legitimate. The fact that the win makes Povetkin the WBA heavyweight champ is totally bogus.

Wladimir Klitschko remains the legitimate heavyweight champ but the WBA elevated him to "super" champion status so that Povetkin and Chagaev could fight for the now conveniently "vacant" heavyweight title. What a joke.

Povetkin capped off a stellar amateur career by winning the super heavyweight gold medal at the 2004 Olympics so big things were expected of him as a pro. Instead, the 6'2" Russian has been managed extremely cautiously - some would say overprotected - and only now, at the age of 31, appears prepared to challenge the division's elite fighters. Povetkin may have a belt now, but until he (or anyone else) beats one of the Klitschko brothers in the ring, no one will recognize him as a true heavyweight champion.

Leon Spinks
Aug 26th 2011, 10:01

Who Is Leon Spinks:
Leon Spinks represented the United States as a light heavyweight boxer in the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal and won the Gold medal. He and Michael Spinks became the first brothers to win Gold medals in the same sport at the same Olympics.

On February 15, 1978, in only his eighth professional fight, Spinks outpointed Muhammad Ali over 15 rounds to capture the world heavyweight title. Spinks lost the title back to Ali just seven months later and his career went into an irreversible tailspin. He last fought in 1995, ending with a pro record of 26-17-3.

Where Is Leon Spinks Now:
Spinks was reportedly homeless just over a decade after winning the heavyweight title. Later, after getting divorced, he briefly lived in a shelter in his native St. Louis. He's been a greeter at Mike Ditka's restaurant in Chicago. He also helped start a gym in Detroit and did assorted odd jobs in California.

More recently, he was living in Columbus, Nebraska and working at a local YMCA and McDonalds. He was also volunteering at an after-school program for youth.

Spinks' son, Cory Spinks, is a former welterweight and junior middleweight world champion. Leon can usually be spotted in or around the corner at each of his son's fights.
