Boxing on Cable TV: Alive and Well
Dec 31st 2012, 00:32

Boxing may no longer be a mainstream sport but it certainly has a loyal following on cable TV. During 2012, 16 fights on cable - 14 on HBO and two on Showtime - attracted audiences of at least one million viewers. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. proved to be the breakout star of the year as he headlined the number one and three cable TV bouts against relatively unknown opponents.

1. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.-Marco Antonio Rubio, Feb. 4, HBO, 1.9 million
2. Bernard Hopkins-Chad Dawson, April 28, HBO, 1.6 million

Ward-Pavlik Canceled
Dec 31st 2012, 00:01

Super middleweight champion Andre Ward and former middleweight champ Kelly Pavlik were originally scheduled to meet on Jan. 26 in Los Angeles. When Ward injured his right shoulder during a sparring session in November, the fight was postponed and rescheduled for March 2. Now, with Ward scheduled to have surgery on his shoulder, the fight has been canceled.

Ward fought only once in 2012 -- a one-sided 10th-round TKO of light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson on Sept. 8. Now 2013 looks like it could be another one-fight year for the number two pound-for-pound boxer.

Pavlik, who seems older than 30, may still get a shot at a name opponent, with Lucian Bute and Arthur Abraham being mentioned as possibilities.

Article VII, Section 107.6 -- Judges

(1) Dress. The judges shall officiate in white clothing, similar to the referee. Female officials will be dressed in white blouse, white skirt or slacks, and preferably, white shoes. Officials working in USA Boxing Group Members’ tournaments may wear the uniforms of that organization at its competitions.

(2) Duties.
(a) Each judge shall independently judge the merits of the two boxers and shall decide the winner according to the rules.
(b) A judge shall not speak to a boxer nor to another judge nor to anyone else except the referee during the contest, but may, if necessary, at the end of a round, bring to the notice of the referee any incident which the referee may appear not to have noticed, such as the misconduct of a coach, loose ropes, etc.
(c) The number of legal scoring blows will be counted with the use of a tally counter or similar counting device. Two counting devices will be used. One device will count the scoring blows for the Red corner and the other device will count the scoring blows for the Blue corner. The number of legal scoring blows awarded to each boxer will be recorded on the score card at the end of each round. In addition, any warnings shall be entered by the judge on the scorecard immediately after the end of the round as indicated by Rule 107.7(1)(b) & (c). The scoring device must be reset to zero prior to the start of the next round.
(d) At the end of the bout, a judge shall total the scoring blows and nominate a winner.
(e) Judges shall not leave their seats until the result has been announced to the public.

(3) Each contest shall be marked by five USA Boxing judges who shall be seated separate from the public and immediately adjacent to the ring. Two of the judges shall be seated on the same side of the ring at a sufficient distance from one another, and each of the other three judges shall be seated at the center of one of the other three sides of the ring. When the number of officials available is insufficient, three judges instead of five may be used, but this shall not apply to the U.S. Championships or similar events.

(4) Before a contest begins, the referee and the judges should confirm the identity of each boxer, fill in the necessary preliminary entries on their score card, such as weight class, bout number, date and affix their signature to the bottom of the paper. Each official will print, in large block letters, the names of the boxers in the red and blue corners in the corresponding left and right columns on the scorecard. Note: Competition organizers should strive to have all scorecards pre-printed or typed with names, club representation, weights, etc.

Undefeated Records in Boxing
Dec 30th 2012, 11:04

An undefeated record in boxing is undoubtedly impressive ... but it can also be misleading. Rocky Marciano and Joe Calzaghe are two of the few modern fighters who retired having won every single fight of their professional career. Both are Hall of Famers with wins over Hall of Fame caliber fighters on their resumes ... but both Marciano and Calzaghe scored their biggest wins against stars who were well past their primes.

Marciano stopped a 37-year-old Joe Louis in Louis' final fight; twice stopped a late-thirties Jersey Joe Walcott in Walcott's final two fights; scored two wins over a mid-thirties Ezzard Charles; and stopped a 38-year-old Archie Moore. It's also worth noting that Walcott, Charles and Moore all started their careers as light heavyweights. Marciano certainly never ducked anyone, he just happened to come along too late to face a prime Joe Louis and too early to face Floyd Patterson, Sonny Liston or Muhammad Ali.

Calzaghe scored solid wins over Jeff Lacy and Mikkel Kessler at their respective peaks, but didn't come to the United States to test himself against the biggest names in the sport until the final two bouts of his pro career: a split decision win against a 43-year-old Bernard Hopkins and a unanimous decision - after surviving a first-round knockdown - against a 39-year-old Roy Jones Jr. who was no longer an elite fighter.

Sven Ottke and Ike Ibeabuchi are two other recent fighters who won each and every one of their pro bouts ... but both of those undefeated marks merit an asterisk next to the zero.

Ottke went 34-0 in a pro career that spanned from 1997 to 2004. He won the IBF super middleweight title from Charles Brewer in only his 13th pro bout and defended that title an amazing 21 times! So what's the problem? He never left Germany to defend his title. He never tested himself against the best in the world during his era. His prime coincided with the primes of Joe Calzaghe in his own weight class, Roy Jones Jr. and Antonio Tarver just above him at light heavyweight, and Bernard Hopkins and Felix Trinidad just below him at middleweight. Boxing politics can be brutal so this is not to suggest that Ottke was intentionally ducking anyone. However, without a signature fight on his resume, it's impossible to consider him an all-time great ... despite the undefeated record.

Ibeabuchi is another case entirely. Ike went 20-0 during his meteoric rise through the heavyweight ranks from 1994 to 1999. At just 26, he had already scored memorable wins over David Tua and Chris Byrd and seemed poised for greatness. Yet Ibeabuchi would never fulfill his vast potential as he proved to be a ticking timebomb outside the ring. Following a series of bizarre incidents characterized by violent behavior, Ibeabuchi was imprisoned on charges that he attempted to rape a woman in a Las Vegas hotel in July 1999. He has since been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and been denied parole multiple times. He is next eligible for a parole hearing in May 2012. He will be 39 at the time and is unlikely to be released, so the possibility of him someday resuming his ring career is extremely remote.

What are your thoughts on undefeated records? Do they impress you? Who among today's crop of undefeated fighters has the best chance of retiring undefeated? We'll take a look at that subject in an upcoming article.

Mosley Defeats De La Hoya i...
Dec 29th 2012, 11:04

Updated September 16, 2003

On Saturday night in Las Vegas, Shane Mosley scored a close, controversial unanimous decision over Oscar De La Hoya to take De La Hoya's WBC and WBA junior middleweight titles. All three judges scored the fight 115-113 for Mosley. In their first meeting, Mosley held a slight statistical advantage according to punch stat numbers and was awarded a narrow majority decision. This time around, De La Hoya had an overwhelming statistical advantage and the judges awarded a unanimous decison to Mosley.

There was no disputing that Mosley deserved a win in the first fight. However, the decision rendered this time around generated a good deal of controversy. In fact, De La Hoya and his promoter, Bob Arum, have threatened to launch a "full investigation" into the scoring -- whatever that means. Both have also threatened to leave the sport. Don't hold your breath on either man sticking to that threat (or promise, depending on how you view it).

Also, HBO's coverage of the bout demonstrated incredible bias towards De La Hoya, the network's biggest PPV attraction. HBO's Jim Lampley, George Foreman and Larry Merchant would have you believe that the Golden Boy was robbed. He wasn't. The decision could have gone either way. It just didn't go the way De La Hoya, Arum and HBO would have liked it to go.

Random Notes and Comments:
* De La Hoya was cut from an accidental clash of heads in the fourth round and bled for the remainder of the fight. Were the judges influenced at all by the sight of Oscar's blood?

* De La Hoya was the beneficiary of a close, controversial decision over Pernell Whitaker largely because he fought as the aggressor and initiated the majority of the exchanges. In this bout, Mosley was the aggressor (though not always the effective aggressor) and - particularly in the second half of the fight - De La Hoya showed signs of tiring and becoming more reluctant to exchange with Mosley. Lesson for De La Hoya (which he should have learned after the Trinidad fight): Judges award aggressiveness.

* Another observation about judges. In a close fight, they often look for rounds to "give" to the fighter who is slightly behind in the early going, thereby creating scorecards which tend to be somwhat closer than the action in the ring. Result: If one fighter takes charge during the second half of a bout, the fighter who was ahead early generally does not have as much of a cushion as he believes he has and runs the risk of losing a close decision. Another lesson De La Hoya should learned in the Trinidad fight.

* Punch stats are an innovative attempt to provide some quantitative data with which to analyze what takes place during a fight. However, the judges do not (and should not) have that data at their disposal when scoring a fight. Plus, since punch stats are basically compiled by two people sitting at ringside pushing buttons whenever they think a punch lands, how is that process any less subjective than a ringside judge selecting the winner of each round based on his opinion of who he thinks was the superior fighter?

* In a poll of 28 sportswriters at ringside, 16 scored it for Mosley, eight for De La Hoya and four had it as a draw.

* The Associated Press had Mosley winning 116-113.

* Decide for yourself who was the winner when HBO replays the fight this Saturday night, Sept. 20, at 9:45 PM ET.
