Biggest Controversies
Mar 28th 2013, 11:02

Boxing's scoring system is subjective by nature. Throw in some incompetence, not to mention corruption, and the stage is set for controversy. Here are a few examples (in chronological order):

1. London, 1908: Australia's Reginald "Snowy" Baker, who won Silver at middleweight, was the only non-British boxer to win a medal. Baker, believing that the referee was not impartial, protested his loss in the finals to John Douglas. Sour grapes? Hardly. The referee was Douglas' father!

2. Amsterdam, 1928: Controversial decisions led to brawls among spectators watching the fights. One such brawl came after a disputed decision went against American flyweight Hyman Miller in the first-round. The U.S. boxing team considered withdrawing from the Games but was talked out of it by Douglas MacArthur, who was - at that time - President of the U.S. Olympic Committee.

3. Berlin, 1936: Lightweight Thomas Hamilton-Brown of South Africa, after losing a first-round split decision, went on an eating binge. No big deal, right? Wrong! It was discovered that one of the judges had reversed his scores and Brown was actually the winner ... but he was unable to make weight for his next bout and was disqualified!

4. Los Angeles, 1984
At the 1984 Games, Evander Holyfield represented the United States in the light heavyweight division. In the second round of his semi-final match with Kevin Barry, Holyfield was disqualified. Referee Gligorije Novicic called for a "break", which instructs the fighters to stop punching. Holyfield, apparently, did not hear the call and threw a punch which dropped Barry to the canvas. When Barry was unable to continue, Holyfield was disqualified. A disappointed Holyfield was awarded the bronze medal.

How bad was this decision? Bad enough that the referee later apologized for being out of position when he made the "break" call. Bad enough that Gold medalist Anton Josipovic of Yugoslavia pulled Holyfield to the top of the podium to join him during the medal ceremony.

5. Seoul, 1988
Roy Jones Jr. was a very successful amateur boxer, compiling a record of 121-13. At the 1988 Games, he represented the United States in the light middleweight division. Jones won every round in dominant fashion to reach the finals. The final was no different as Jones outlanded his South Korean opponent Park Si-Hun 86-32. Unfortunately, the judges were either pressured, coerced or bribed to favor the local fighter and awarded Park an indefensible 3- 2 decision. One judge admitted the decision was a mistake and all three judges ended up being suspended.

How bad was this decision? Park reportedly congratulated Jones after the bout and admitted that the decision was wrong. The decision was bad enough that, despite winning only a Silver Medal, Jones was awarded the Val Barker Trophy as Games' most outstanding and stylistic boxer.

The IOC - despite investigating and concluding that three of the judges were wined and dined by Korean officials - allowed the decision to stand.

Current Heavyweight Rankings
Mar 28th 2013, 11:02

Updated February 28, 2013

The heavyweight division has always been and will always be the glamour division of the sport ... but it's kind of a mess at the present time. Lennox Lewis was the (more-or-less) undisputed champ ... but then he retired. Then Vitali Klitschko seemed to be on his way to becoming the (more-or-less) undisputed champ ... but then he retired too ... for nearly four years. Plus all the top pound-for-pound fighters in the sport are campaigning in lower weight categories. Nevertheless, the big money and the majority of the media attention continues to focus on the big boys. Accordingly, it seems appropriate to have an in-depth look at who's who in today's heavyweight division and rank them accordingly. Plenty of magazines and web sites will give their top ten. However, if you really love boxing, then ten is definitely not enough. So here they are -- the top fifty heavyweight fighters in the world today. Let the debates begin!

Article VII, Section 107.6 -- Judges

(1) Dress. The judges shall officiate in white clothing, similar to the referee. Female officials will be dressed in white blouse, white skirt or slacks, and preferably, white shoes. Officials working in USA Boxing Group Members’ tournaments may wear the uniforms of that organization at its competitions.

(2) Duties.
(a) Each judge shall independently judge the merits of the two boxers and shall decide the winner according to the rules.
(b) A judge shall not speak to a boxer nor to another judge nor to anyone else except the referee during the contest, but may, if necessary, at the end of a round, bring to the notice of the referee any incident which the referee may appear not to have noticed, such as the misconduct of a coach, loose ropes, etc.
(c) The number of legal scoring blows will be counted with the use of a tally counter or similar counting device. Two counting devices will be used. One device will count the scoring blows for the Red corner and the other device will count the scoring blows for the Blue corner. The number of legal scoring blows awarded to each boxer will be recorded on the score card at the end of each round. In addition, any warnings shall be entered by the judge on the scorecard immediately after the end of the round as indicated by Rule 107.7(1)(b) & (c). The scoring device must be reset to zero prior to the start of the next round.
(d) At the end of the bout, a judge shall total the scoring blows and nominate a winner.
(e) Judges shall not leave their seats until the result has been announced to the public.

(3) Each contest shall be marked by five USA Boxing judges who shall be seated separate from the public and immediately adjacent to the ring. Two of the judges shall be seated on the same side of the ring at a sufficient distance from one another, and each of the other three judges shall be seated at the center of one of the other three sides of the ring. When the number of officials available is insufficient, three judges instead of five may be used, but this shall not apply to the U.S. Championships or similar events.

(4) Before a contest begins, the referee and the judges should confirm the identity of each boxer, fill in the necessary preliminary entries on their score card, such as weight class, bout number, date and affix their signature to the bottom of the paper. Each official will print, in large block letters, the names of the boxers in the red and blue corners in the corresponding left and right columns on the scorecard. Note: Competition organizers should strive to have all scorecards pre-printed or typed with names, club representation, weights, etc.

Boxing: What's Hot Now: Michael Spinks

Michael Spinks
Mar 12th 2013, 11:05

Who Is Michael Spinks:
Michael Spinks represented the United States as a middleweight boxer in the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal and won the Gold medal. He and Leon Spinks became the first brothers to win Gold medals in the same sport at the same Olympics.

As a pro, Michael became the first light heavyweight champion to capture the heavyweight title when he outpointed Larry Holmes - who was trying to tie Rocky Marciano's 49-0 record - in 1985. Spinks' final bout was in 1988 when he was knocked out in 91 seconds by Mike Tyson. After his first and only loss, Spinks retired with a record of 31-1 with 21 KOs.

Where Is Michael Spinks Now:
Spinks is the rare world class fighter who left the sport with money and his health and was never lured back into the ring. Spinks was inducted into the Boxing Hall of Fame in 1994 but remains nearly invisible on the boxing scene these days.

The intensely private Spinks lives in a seven-bedroom house - not including the guest house - on a secluded five-acre spread outside Wilmington, Delaware. He remains close with his former promoter, Butch Lewis. On the rare occasions that Spinks is seen in public, it's typically at an event that Lewis is promoting.
