LeRoy Neiman: 1921-2012
Jun 30th 2012, 14:52

LeRoy Neiman, known for his colorful impressionistic paintings of sporting events, died recently at the age of 91. Neiman, with his distinctive handlebar mustache, was a fixture at ringside for many of boxing's biggest fights. Muhammad Ali was a frequent subject of Neiman's work.

Earlier in his life, Neiman fought in World War II, participating in both the invasion of Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge.

Leon Spinks
Jun 30th 2012, 11:01

Who Is Leon Spinks:
Leon Spinks represented the United States as a light heavyweight boxer in the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal and won the Gold medal. He and Michael Spinks became the first brothers to win Gold medals in the same sport at the same Olympics.

On February 15, 1978, in only his eighth professional fight, Spinks outpointed Muhammad Ali over 15 rounds to capture the world heavyweight title. Spinks lost the title back to Ali just seven months later and his career went into an irreversible tailspin. He last fought in 1995, ending with a pro record of 26-17-3.

Where Is Leon Spinks Now:
Spinks was reportedly homeless just over a decade after winning the heavyweight title. Later, after getting divorced, he briefly lived in a shelter in his native St. Louis. He's been a greeter at Mike Ditka's restaurant in Chicago. He also helped start a gym in Detroit and did assorted odd jobs in California.

More recently, he was living in Columbus, Nebraska and working at a local YMCA and McDonalds. He was also volunteering at an after-school program for youth.

Spinks' son, Cory Spinks, is a former welterweight and junior middleweight world champion. Leon can usually be spotted in or around the corner at each of his son's fights.

Becoming An Olympic Boxer
Jun 27th 2012, 11:01

Winning a Gold Medal at the Olympics is the greatest achievement possible in amateur boxing. A successful showing in the Olympics has also proven to be the best possible way to launch a professional boxing career (much better than 'paying your dues' on the pro circuit). So how does an amateur fighter go about qualifying for the Olympics?

GOVERNING BODY FOR THE SPORT

The International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) is the international governing body for boxing. USA Boxing is the national governing body for boxing in the USA.

HOW TO QUALIFY FOR THE OLYMPICS OR THE OLYMPIC TEAM

Boxers qualify for the Olympic Games through regional qualifying tournaments in the Americas, Europe, Asia, Africa and Oceania. The number of boxers accepted from any region depends upon the strength of boxing in the region.

There are eleven men's boxing events (none yet for women), one for each weight category. A country can enter a maximum of one athlete per weight category. The host nation is allocated a maximum of six places (if not otherwise qualified).

There is a limit of 28 boxers for each event, except for heavyweight and super heavyweight which have a limit of 16. This limits the total number of boxers to 284.

At the Olympics, boxers are paired off at random (without regard to ranking) and fight in a single-elimination tournament. However, unlike most Olympic events, the loser in each semi-final bout receives a bronze medal.

2012 U.S. Olympic Boxing Trials
Jun 27th 2012, 11:01

Updated August 07, 2011

With the 2012 U.S. Olympic Boxing Trials now complete, ten American boxers are one step closer to representing the United States in the 2012 Olympic Games. In order to qualify to compete in London, each fighter still needs a top ten showing (top six for the heavyweight and super heavyweight divisions) in the 2011 AIBA World Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan (September 22 - October 10).

Here are the results of the Finals of the 2012 U.S. Olympic Boxing Trials in each weight class:

108 lbs: Erros Correa, San Jose, CA, dec. Santos Vasquez, Sparks, NV, 22-18
114 lbs: Rau'shee Warren, Cincinnati, OH, dec. Shawn Simpson, Chicago IL., 31-18
123 lbs: Joseph Diaz Jr., El Monte, CA, dec. O'Shanique Foster, Orange, TX, 17-14
132 lbs: Jose Ramirez, Avenal, CA, dec. Raynell Williams, Cleveland, OH, 21-16
141 lbs: Jamel Herring, Coram, NY, dec. Pedro Sosa, Bronx, NY, 15-10
152 lbs: Errol Spence, Desoto, TX, dec. Amir Imam, Albany, NY, 24-19
165 lbs: Jesse Hart, Philadelphia, PA, dec. Luis Arias, Milwaukee, WI, 21-6
178 lbs: Marcus Browne, Staten Island, NY, dec. Siju Shabazz, Las Cruces, NM, 14-12
201 lbs: Michael Hunter, Las Vegas, NV, dec. Joseph Williams, Queens, NY, 28-17
201+ lbs: Lenroy Thompson, Lenexa, KS, dec. Laron Mitchell, San Francisco, CA, 21-9

The U.S. has won more medals in boxing than any other country in Olympic history (108) ... but only one Gold in the past three Olympics (Andre Ward, 2004) and a single Bronze medal at the 2008 Games (Deontay Wilder).

Two of this team's best hopes for Olympic Gold are Jose Ramirez, who has won five consecutive USA boxing national titles, and Rau'shee Warren, who has now made the Olympic team three consecutive times.

Joe Zanders, the national coach for USA Boxing, will be the head coach of the 2012 U.S. Olympic Boxing Team.

Lopez Upsets Ortiz
Jun 27th 2012, 11:01

Updated June 24, 2012

Unheralded Josesito Lopez never considered himself a stepping stone after moving up from junior welterweight to replace Andre Berto, who failed a drug test, to face former WBC welterweight champ Victor Ortiz ... and he certainly didn't fight like one. Ortiz needed a win to advance to a big money pay-per-view match with WBC junior middleweight champ Saul Alvarez on September 15. Instead, Alvarez will once again be looking for a new opponent (Paul Williams and James Kirkland were previous candidates for the match).

Lopez fought hard in round after round but - after nine rounds - was behind on all three cards (88-83, 87-74, 86-85) and his left eye was swelling shut. He had connected with numerous power punches but was outlanded overall (147-122) and seemed unable to hurt the bigger - and heavily muscled - Ortiz. However, late in round nine, Lopez caught Ortiz with a left hook that was apparently far more damaging that it initially appeared. Shockingly, as round ten was about to begin, Ortiz told referee Jack Reiss that his jaw was broken and that he was not going to continue. After the fight, Ortiz said his corned urged him to continue but he was unable to close his month. It's difficult to criticize a fighter for electing not to fight with a broken jaw ... but every boxing fan remembers fighters - such as Muhammad Ali and Arthur Abraham - that continued to fight - and win - after suffering broken jaws.

The ending of the bout was reminiscent of 2009 when Ortiz - ahead on points - quit on his stool against Marcos Maidana after six knockdown-filled rounds. This fight also included another Ortiz trademark -- a controversial foul. In the biggest bout of his career, Ortiz was stopped shortly after intentionally head butting Floyd Mayweather. This time, Ortiz hit Lopez with a rabbit punch in the back of the neck in round five. Fortunately, Lopez was able to continue and - like Mayweather - went on to stop Ortiz.

The shocking result was one of the biggest upsets in recent memory ... and - combined with the co-feature in which Lucas Matthysse stopped Humberto Soto in the fifth round of all-action light welterweight slugfest - capped a much needed good night for the sport of boxing. Why was it so good? Largely because neither of the main events required judges. There's nothing wrong with boxing that can't be solved by knockouts. KOs (and TKOs) do the only thing the sport needs to thrive ... render judges, promoters and sanctioning bodies irrelevant. All hail the knockout!

Mike Tyson Fight-by-Fight Career Record

Mike Tyson - Photo Gallery - 1986-1989

May 1, 2002 - "I'm just like you. I enjoy the forbidden fruits in life, too. I think it's un-American not to go out with a woman, not to be with a beautiful woman, not to get my dick sucked ... It's just what I said before, everybody in this country is a big fucking liar. (The media) tells people ... that this person did this and this person did that and then we find out that we're just human and we find out that Michael Jordan cheats on his wife just like everybody else and that we all cheat on our fucking wife in one way or another either emotionally, physically or sexually or one way."

May 1, 2002 - "There's no one perfect. We're always gonna do that. Jimmy Swaggart is lascivious, Tyson is lascivious -- but we're not criminally, at least I'm not, criminally lascivious. You know what I mean. I may like to fornicate more than other people -- it's just who I am. I sacrifice so much of my life, can I at least get laid? I mean, I been robbed of my most of my money, can I at least get head without the people wanting to harass me and wanting to throw me in jail?"

May 1, 2002 - "I feel like sometimes that I was born, that I'm not meant for this society because everyone here is a fucking hypocrite. Everybody says they believe in God but they don't do God's work. Everybody counteracts what God is really about. If Jesus was here, do you think Jesus would show me any love? Do you think Jesus would love me? I'm a Muslim, but do you think Jesus would love me ... I think Jesus would have a drink with me and discuss ... why you acting like that? Now, he would be cool. He would talk to me. No Christian ever did that and said in the name of Jesus even ... They'd throw me in jail and write bad articles about me and then go to church on Sunday and say Jesus is a wonderful man and he's coming back to save us. But they don't understand that when he comes back, that these crazy greedy capitalistic men are gonna kill him again."

June 8, 2002 - Tyson is knocked out by Lennox Lewis in the eight round in Memphis, Tennnessee.

Jan. 13, 2003 - Tyson is divorced from his wife Monica, with whom he has two children.

Feb. 22, 2003 - Tyson knocks out Clifford Etienne in the first round in Memphis, Tennnessee.

May 28, 2003 - In an interview, boxer Tyson denounces Desiree Washington as "just a lying, reptilian, monstrous, young lady. I just hate her guts. She put me in that state where, I don't know, I really wish I did now. Now I really do want to rape her and her fucking mama."

June 21, 2003 - Tyson allegedly beats up two autograph seekers in the lobby of the Brooklyn Marriott.

July 11, 2003 - A bodyguard files suit against Tyson, claiming that the boxer punched him twice in the face, breaking his left orbital bone.

Aug. 1, 2003 - Tyson files for bankruptcy in New York.

Sept. 13, 2003 - Tyson attends a charity benefit at Michael Jackson's Neverland Ranch. When asked why he came, Tyson confesses "Because I've got nothing else to do."

Sept. 21, 2003 - Rap artist 50 Cent purchases Tyson's 48,000-square-foot mansion in Farmington, Connecticut for $4.1 million.

June 28, 2004 - In an interview, Tyson announces that since declaring bankruptcy "I've got nowhere to live. I've been crashing with friends, literally sleeping in shelters. Unsavoury characters are giving me money and I'm taking it. I need it. The drug dealers, they sympathise with me. They see me as some sort of pathetic character ... I know I was a tough, bad-ass talking fighter, but I ain't no mob figure. I did my time for the rape. I paid my money to Las Vegas. I paid my dues. I ain't the same person I was when I bit that guy's ear off."

July 30, 2004 - Tyson is knocked out in the fourth round by Danny Williams in Louisville, Kentucky.

June 11, 2005 - Tyson fails to come out for the seventh round against Kevin McBride in Washington, D.C.. After the fight, Tyson said "I don't have the stomach for this anymore. I most likely won't fight anymore. I'm not going to disrespect the sport by losing to this caliber of fighter".
