Povetkin Outpoints Chagaev for Bogus Belt
Aug 27th 2011, 19:27

Undefeated heavyweight Alexander Povetkin passed the biggest test of his professional career with a 12-round unanimous decision win (117-113 twice and 116-112) over former beltholder Ruslan Chagaev. The win is totally legitimate. The fact that the win makes Povetkin the WBA heavyweight champ is totally bogus.

Wladimir Klitschko remains the legitimate heavyweight champ but the WBA elevated him to "super" champion status so that Povetkin and Chagaev could fight for the now conveniently "vacant" heavyweight title. What a joke.

Povetkin capped off a stellar amateur career by winning the super heavyweight gold medal at the 2004 Olympics so big things were expected of him as a pro. Instead, the 6'2" Russian has been managed extremely cautiously - some would say overprotected - and only now, at the age of 31, appears prepared to challenge the division's elite fighters. Povetkin may have a belt now, but until he (or anyone else) beats one of the Klitschko brothers in the ring, no one will recognize him as a true heavyweight champion.
