Hector "Macho" Camacho went into cardiac arrest this morning and is currently on life support after being shot in the face in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. Doctors say the situation is "delicate" but the "prognosis is not good".
Camacho, 50, was sitting in the passenger seat of a Ford Mustang when he was shot. The bullet reportedly struck Camacho in the jaw before exiting and lodging in his right shoulder, fracturing two vertebrae.
The man in the driver's seat of the car, Adrian Moreno, 49, was killed in the attack as he tried to get out of the car. According to police, Moreno had ten bags of cocaine in the car at the time, one of which was open. So far, no arrests have been made.
Camacho compiled a record of 79-6-3 with 38 KOs in a 30-year pro career that began in 1980. While he never truly retired, his most recent fight was a 10 round decision loss to Saul Duran in May 2010.
The Macho Man's flamboyant style and frequent legal problems outside the ring tend to overshadow what he actually accomplished inside the ring. Camacho won titles at super featherweight, lightweight and junior welterweight and holds victories (in chronological order) over Rafael "Bazooka" Limon, Freddie Roach, Edwin Rosario, Cornelius Boza-Edwards, Howard Davis Jr., Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini, Vinny Pazienza, Greg Haugen, Roberto Duran (twice) and Sugar Ray Leonard. A defensive master with a great chin, Camacho was never knocked out -- going the distance with heavy-handed Hall of Famers Julio Cesar Chavez, Felix Trinidad and Oscar De la Hoya.
