Round-by-round coverage, scoring and punch stats of the May 7, 2011 bout between
Manny Pacquiao and
Shane Mosley in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Round One: Both men start cautiously. Standard feeling out round. Manny slightly busier but Mosley looks quick, no reason to think he won't be extremely competitive. Pacquiao 10-9
Round Two: Pacquiao begins to open up and lands a few combinations. Accidental clash of heads but both fighters escape without a cut. Mosley unfazed but not doing anything offensively. Pacquiao 10-9
Round Three: Manny picks up the pace and begins to flurry. Mosley retreats and appears to be trying to time a counterpunch. A short, straight left from Pacquiao drops Mosley with 1:17 to go in the round. Shane easily beats the count and alternates between holding and running to make it to the bell. Only the third time Mosley has been knocked down in his pro career. Pacquiao 10-8
Round Four: Pacquiao remains the aggressor and is taking some chances. It's clear he wants to become the first to KO Mosley. Mosley hits the canvas but it's correctly ruled a slip. Mosley lands a few punches but does more covering up than countering. Pacquiao 10-9
Round Five: Manny continues to dictate the pace. Heads collide again but fortunately no cuts. Mosley extremely defensive-minded. Another round for Pacquiao Pacquiao 10-9
Round Six: Mosley lands a few good right hands but is not taking any chances. Manny punctuates an unorthodox combination with a nice left uppercut. Pacquiao 10-9
Round Seven: Crowd grows restless as Mosley is reluctant to engage. Pacquiao continues to throw and land twice as frequently as Mosley. Heads collide yet again. Shane appears content to survive from round to round. Pacquiao 10-9
Round Eight: Mosley has not taken much punishment but is beginning to slow down. His legs look tired. He loads up on a few one-punch counters but doesn't land anything meaningful. Pacquaio is not terribly sharp tonight but he remains busy. Crowd boos at end of round. Pacquiao 10-9
Round Nine: Mosley lands a few single punches in the first minute of the rounds, but the last two minutes are all Pacquiao. Manny using feints effectively to set up his flurries. Pacquiao 10-9
Round Ten: Pacquiao picks up the pace in this round. He is likely upset by the boos from the crowd and wants to go for the KO. Manny hits the canvas from a half-push/half-slip and referee Kenny Bayless incorrectly rules it a knockdown. Good thing that point is going to be meaningless on the scorecards because he was 100% wrong. Even 10-10 (only due to the bogus knockdown)
Round Eleven: Pacquiao is doing everything he can to put on a show but Mosley is in full retreat/survival mode. Disappointing showing for Sugar Shane. It's going to be very hard for Manny to score a KO if Mosley continues to stay in his shell. Pacquiao 10-9
Round Twelve: Pacquiao spends the last round chasing Mosley around the ring. He lands some combinations but Mosley is never in any real danger. Mosley throws a few punches but seems content to simply make it to the final bell. Pacquiao 10-9

Post-Fight: Mosley congratulates Pacquiao and calls him the "real pound-for-pound king". Manny says his legs got tight in the middle rounds and sounds disappointed in his performance. Shane says age wasn't his problem, it was Manny's speed and punching power. When asked about retirement, Mosley said "I really don't know". When asked about Floyd Mayweather Jr., Pacquiao seems to have accepted that they may never meet in the ring and appears content with his status as pound-for-pound king, with or without a Mayweather fight.
What's Next: Mosley has had a Hall of Fame career but, at 39, he's done. After three consecutive lackluster performances, there is very little left in Sugar Shane's tank. He's got nothing left to prove and should leave the sport with his health intact.
As for Pacquaio, Mayweather continues to be THE fight everyone wants to see. If that bout remains elusive, then Manny's other options include Amir Khan, Victor Ortiz, Timothy Bradley or a third fight with Juan Manuel Marquez. All intriguing ... but Pacquiao-Mayweather needs to happen.
