Round-by-round coverage, scoring and punch stats of the September 19, 2009 bout between
Floyd Mayweather Jr. and
Juan Manuel Marquez in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Pre-fight: Marquez enters the ring, followed by Mayweather. The fight is underway!
Round One: Tentative first round. Mayweather's advantages in size and speed are evident. No signs of ring rust. Mayweather 10-9
Round Two: Marquez lands a right to Mayweather's head. Pretty Boy smiles. Mayweather drops Marquez with a perfect left hook midway through the round. Marquez seems to be OK. Mayweather 10-8
Round Three: Marquez has tremendous heart and experience but in every other way appears to be in over his head. Mayweather is incredibly accurate with his punches. Mayweather 10-9
Round Four: Marquez lands another nice right but Mayweather rolls with the punch and smiles. Marquez has a small cut along his right eye. Mayweather 10-9
Round Five: Marquez, uncharacteristically, is fighting as the aggressor but nothing is really working against Mayweather's counterpunching. Hard to imagine how Marquez makes this competitive. Mayweather 10-9
Round Six: Mayweather is fighting with his hands down and having his way with Marquez. Marquez is bleeding from the nose and the few punches he's landing are having no effect on Mayweather. Mayweather 10-9
Round Seven: Marquez lands his best combination of the fight but still loses the round. It's been that kind of night for Marquez. Mayweather 10-9
Round Eight: Mayweather continues to pitch a shutout. His defense has been impenetrable. Mayweather 10-9
Round Nine: Brilliant selection of opponent by Mayweather. Marquez is a big name but presents no risk. Only question now is whether Marquez makes it to the final bell. Mayweather 10-9
Round Ten: Marquez continues to demonstrate pride and effort but to no avail. I expected Mayweather to win an easy decision but this is a complete mismatch and it's no longer any fun to watch a great fighter like Marquez get toyed with by a bigger, better opponent. Mayweather 10-9
Round Eleven: Mayweather begins to open up in hopes of scoring a knockout. Marquez is hanging tough but the moral victory of going the distance is all he can hope for at this point. Mayweather 10-9
Round Twelve: Mayweather fails to get the KO in an otherwise flawless performance. Marquez finishes with dignity. Glad this one is over. Mayweather 10-9
Unofficial scores: Any score other than 120-107 is almost unimaginable.
Official scores: 118-109, 120-107 and 119-108.
Punch Stats: Total Punches: Mayweather - 290 of 493 (59%); Marquez - 69 of 583 (12%). Total Jabs: Mayweather - 185 of 316 (59%); Marquez - 21 of 288 (7%). Power Punches: Mayweather - 105 of 177 (59%); Marquez - 48 of 295 (16%).
Post-Fight: Mayweather doesn't even look like he was in a fight. After the bout, Mayweather gives Marquez respect but Max Kellerman screws up the post-fight interview by bringing Shane Mosley to the microphone to challenge Mayweather to a fight. Mayweather shakes Mosley's hand and says he's "one hell of a fighter", but predictably - and understandably - feels disrespected by having to share center stage after such a dominant performance. As Kellerman attempts to continue the interview, Mayweather grabs the microphone saying "I'm going to do the talking 'cause you do too much talking". Having lost control of the situation, Max throws it back to Jim Lampley at ringside before any meaningful analysis of the bout or any discussion whatsoever of a possible fight with Manny Pacquiao.
A classy Marquez, who it appears HBO wasn't even going to bother interviewing, comes to ringside to talk and admits that Mayweather was simply too big for him but says Pacquaio's aggressive style might give him a better chance.
