Historic First:
2012 is the first year that women's boxing will be an Olympic event. When Marlen Esparza qualified to compete at the 2012 Olympic Games, she became the first American woman ever to qualify for the Olympics. Esparza already has an
endorsement deal with CoverGirl cosmetics and has appeared in
television commercials for Coca-Cola. A medal in London will insure even greater fame for Esparza.
Natural Leader:
Marlen was student body president at Pasadena High School (in Pasadena, Texas) and graduated in the top 2% of her class. Her goals outside the ring include graduating from college.
Career Highlights:
Marlen won a bronze medal at the 2006 World Boxing Championships and won gold at the 2008 Pan American Games. She has been ranked #1 in the U.S. for seven consecutive years and won every national tournament she has entered -- winning six straight USA Boxing National Championships (2006 - 2011). Marlen only lost twice in the U.S. in the last nine years.
