17-year-old Claressa Shields of Flint, Michigan won the first ever middleweight Gold medal in women's Olympic boxing. Shields was too strong and too athletic for Russia's 33-year-old Nadezda Torlopova, winning on points by a score of 19-12.
Shields was only member of 12-person U.S. boxing team to win Gold in London. Women's flyweight Marlen Esparza, who won a Bronze, was the only other medal winner on the team.
Lightweight Katie Taylor of Ireland and flyweight Nicola Adams of Great Britain won the other two weight classifications at the first Olympics to include women's boxing as a medal sport.
