Guerrero Outpoints Berto in Classic Slugfest
Nov 26th 2012, 11:08

Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero scored the biggest and most impressive win of his career with a 12-round unanimous decision over former welterweight champion Andre Berto. Guerrero dropped Berto in both the first and second rounds and looked to be on the verge of an early round TKO. Berto, however, had other plans. Despite eyes that were rapidly swelling shut, Berto fought back valiantly for the remaining ten rounds of the fight. Most of the bout was fought on the inside where Berto quickly discovered he couldn't Guerrero with his right uppercut. Guerrero, a lightweight as recently as last year, somehow took everything Berto had to offer and - despite a right eye that was nearly swollen shut - continued to press the action until the final bell.

This was a Fight of the Year candidate and round 12 was a Round of the Year candidate. The crowd was so loud that referee Lou Moret was unable to hear the final bell and the action didn't stop until a ringside official jumped into the ring. In the end, all three judges scored the bout 116-110 for Guerrero -- completely reasonable but not entirely indicative of the back-and-forth nature of the fight.

Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KOs) retained his WBC interim welterweight belt and now hopes for a big money bout against either Floyd Mayweather Jr. or Manny Pacquiao.

Despite the loss, Berto (28-2, 22 KOs) remains a top ten welterweight and has a style that fans want to see. He'll need some time off for his face to heal, but would be a great opponent for Timothy Bradley, Devon Alexander or Victor Ortiz (in a rematch of 2011's Fight of the Year).
