The boxing career of former champ
Paul Williams is over after a motorcycle accident has left him paralyzed from the waist down. The injuries are not considered life-threatening and Williams is conscious, alert and - believe it or not - in good spirits. Surgery is scheduled for later this week to help stabilize the healthy portion of his spine.
The crash happened in Atlanta shortly before 8 am.m on Sunday morning. Williams' manager says that Williams - who was wearing a helmet - swerved to avoid an oncoming car and rode up an embankment before losing control of the bike, landing on his back and head. A police report states that Williams "was traveling too fast for conditions and couldn't negotiate a curve and the bike left the roadway" but makes no mention of other vehicles. Regardless of the exact cause of the crash, the accident brings a sudden, tragic end to the boxing career of a talented, exciting fighter who has always seemed to be a genuinely good guy.
Just last week it was announced that Williams would challenge WBC junior middleweight champ Saul "Canelo" Alvarez on September 15 in Las Vegas. Instead, the 30-year-old Williams will be facing an even bigger challenge ...
