Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. continues to get better - and bigger - with every fight. In his third defense of the WBC middleweight belt, Chavez was simply too big and too strong for game but outgunned challenger Andy Lee. Lee showed heart but absorbed a lot of punishment before referee Laurence Cole stopped the fight at 2:21 of round seven with Lee rendered defenseless on the ropes. Chavez, who complained of leg cramps during the bout, was outworked by Lee and actually behind 58-56 on all three cards at the time of the stoppage.
Still only 26, Chavez has 48 pro bouts under his belt and continues to grow into his six-foot frame. He weighed 130 for his pro debut back in 2003. Now he's a big 160 pounder who reportedly came into the ring against Lee at 180!
Next up for Chavez may be an even bigger test if a September 15 date with middleweight champ Sergio Martinez becomes a reality. A year ago, Chavez would have been considered a huge underdog against Martinez. Now he looks like the most legitimate threat in the middleweight division ...
