Boxing Writer Bert Sugar Dies at 75

Iconic boxing writer Bert Sugar, rarely seen without his trademark fedora and cigar, died of cardiac arrest earlier today in New York at the age of 75.

Sugar wrote over 80 books, primarily on boxing history, and was the editor of several boxing magazines, including The Ring, Boxing Illustrated and Bert Sugar's Fight Game. He also appeared in a number of boxing movies, such as Rocky Balboa, Night and the City, and The Great White Hype. One of the sport's greatest - and most opinionated - historians, it's difficult to find a boxing documentary in which Sugar is not interviewed.

Sugar was elected to the International Boxing Hall of Fame in January 2005. A truly Runyonesque character, Sugar was a link to the glory days of boxing. He will be missed.

Seven former world champions were in action this weekend. Five scored victories that give them an opportunity to pursue additional paydays. Two others may have reached the end of the line.

The winners were Zab Judah (over previously undefeated Vernon Paris), Tomasz Adamek (in his first fight since his unsuccessful title shot against Vitali Klitschko), Nate Campbell (in an upset of Victor Cayo), Jan Zaveck (in his first bout since losing his title to Andre Berto) and Enzo Maccarinelli (surviving a first round knock down to win a unanimous decision).

On the losing end were Erik Morales and Sergei Liakhovich -- both of whom were facing young, undefeated opponents. Morales, 35, fought valiantly - as always - but was knocked down in the 11th and easily outpointed by 24-year-old Danny Garcia. Morales lost his WBC light welterweight title on the scales before the bout and faded badly down the stretch. "El Terrible" gave fight fans many thrills during a Hall of Fame career, including an exciting - and much better than expected - run after his first "retirement", but now it's time to retire for good.

Liakhovich, also 35, took a one-sided beating at the hands of 27-year-old Bryant Jennings -- a young American heavyweight worth watching (feels good to say that for the first time in a while). Liakhovich, who is 2-4 in just six bouts since taking the WBO heavyweight belt from Lamon Brewster in 2006, is well past his prime and should hang up the gloves before he gets hurt.
